OBITUARIES:  (published Jan. 3, 2019)

Harold H. Harmet
  
Harold “Hal” H. Harmet, 89, of Hinsdale passed away at home Dec. 27, 2018.
   Hal was born in 1929 in Chicago to Alfred Harmet and Evelyn R. Harmet, and was raised with his brothers Kenneth and Richard in Oak Park, where he attended Oak Park-River Forest High School.
   Hal graduated from Indiana University in 1951, where he played football and earned letters as a high jumper in track and field his junior and senior years. He then attended Harvard Business School and earned a master’s of business administration in 1953.
   Following graduation from business school, Hal was selected for Officer Candidate School at Naval Station Newport, R.I., where he was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. He gained the rank of lieutenant during service in Naples, Italy.
   After his service, Hal returned to Chicago and married Jean Anderson Somers in 1956.    Together, they settled in Hinsdale and raised three children, Sally (Robert) Powers, David (Lisa) Harmet and Jeffrey (Anne) Harmet. Hal was widowed in 1987, and married Phyllis G. McCoy in 1990.
   Hal had a long and successful career in the financial services industry as a certified financial analyst with several Chicago firms, and later as a money manager for individual discretionary accounts at William Blair & Co. He remained interested and engaged in the stock market throughout his life.
   An excellent athlete, Hal was a very competitive tennis player and swam daily until late in life.    He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Hinsdale Golf Club and for many years kept a second home in Savannah, Ga.
   In addition to his wife and children, Hal is survived by his brother Richard (Joan) Harmet, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as the McCoy family and many friends.
   A memorial service will be private.

David Lee Kabat
  
David Lee Kabat, 72, a former Hinsdale resident, passed away peacefully Dec. 29, 2018.
He was born in 1946 in Chicago to Leo and Eleanor (DeTrana) Kabat.
   David attended high school at Loyola Academy before earning degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Notre Dame Law School, where he made many lifelong friends. As he began his law career, David also served in the Army Reserves for six years during the Vietnam era. Among other things, David was admired for his humility, honesty, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his loved ones. David focused his legal career on construction law, commercial real estate law and banking law, with noted skills in contract negotiation and litigation. He achieved an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, in which peers rank a lawyer at the highest level of professional experience.
   David was preceded in death by his father, Leo; and his sister, Mary Ellen Barron.
   David is survived by his wife, Leslie; his children, Lindsey (Larry) Montgomery, Jonathan (Jenny), Allie and Jessie; his four grandchildren, Taylor, Anabelle, Emma and Bodin; his mother, Eleanor; his sister, Betty Ann (Tim) Shanley; and many nieces nephews.
   A funeral Mass was said Jan. 2, at St. Mary of the Lake Parish in New Buffalo, Mich.

   Geisen-Carlisle Funeral & Cremation in Michigan City, Ind., handled the arrangements.

George Thomas Offord
  
George Thomas Offord, 90, of Hinsdale, died Dec. 26, 2018.
   He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean (the late David) Gordon.
   He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carole, nee Fabacher; his children, George Offord (Denise Clements), James (Teresita) Offord, Joseph (Deirdre) Offord, Mary (Nick) Gibb, Susan (George) Weber and Lucille Offord; his seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
   Inurnment will be private at the Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, La.
   Adolf Funeral Home in Willowbrook handled the arrangements.
