OBITUARIES:  (published Feb. 23, 2017)

Nancy Marie Donley
  
Nancy Marie Donley, nee Hogrefe, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 10, 2017.
   Nancy was born in Hinsdale in 1952 to Elaine and Arnold Hogrefe and attended Hinsdale Central High School.
   She married Lawrence Donley on Nov. 3, 1973, and they settled in Lemont, where they raised their two children. She worked for many years at Mary Jane’s Cross ’N’ Stitch, and the family’s house was always decorated with her needle work.
   Nancy especially enjoyed spending time with her two grandchildren, visiting the Morton Arboretum and volunteering at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Elaine and Arnold Hogrefe; and her brother, Roger (Mary) Hogrefe.
   She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Lawrence; her children, Carrie (Patrick Gale) Donley and Adam (Kate Gawlik) Donley; her grandchildren, Lillian and Kellyn Donley; her brother, Dave Hogrefe; and many nieces and nephews.
   Services were held Feb. 18.

Robert D. Erickson
  
Robert D. “Bob” Erickson, 73, of Hinsdale died Feb. 16, 2017, at Amita Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
   Bob retired from ServiceMaster as an executive vice president after 36 years. He was a voracious and skilled golfer and was a dear friend to many. He served on the board of trustees for many nonprofit organizations, most recently for Far East Broadcasting Company. He cherished his family and his love for the Lord was his guide and strength. He will be deeply missed.
   He was preceded in death by his sister, Vivian Nimmo. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Erickson, nee Tillman; his children, Matthew (Susan), Daniel (Amy) and Adam (Nicole) Erickson; his grandchildren, Nathan, Rachel, Annika, Hailey, Tyler, Claire and Iris Erickson; and his siblings, Cynthia (the late Roger) Oslund and David (Lisa) Erickson.
   A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Willow Creek Community Church, 67 E. Algonquin Road, South Barrington.
   Burial was private.

Elizabeth "Betty" Larson
  
Elizabeth “Betty” Larson, nee Frush, 94, died Feb. 18, 2017, at King Bruwaert in Burr Ridge.
   She was born in 1922 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, U.S. Air Force retired Col. Raymond Edward Larson; her son, Raymond Douglas (Anne) Larson; and her siblings, Charles Frush and the Mary Ellen (Charles) West.
   She is survived by her children, Patricia Anne Larson and Dr. Bruce (Karen) Larson; her grandchildren, Jason, Lauren and Amber Kulak, Ryan Douglas Larson, Libby (Ross) Holdren, William Vagenas and Lia Larson; her great-grandchildren, William, Annie, Everett and Owen; and her brother, Robert Frush.
   Visitation is at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at St. Isaac Jogues Parish, 306 W. Fourth St. Hinsdale.
   A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. at the church.
   Interment will be private at Arlington National Cemetery.

Susan Love Purdy
  
Susan Love Purdy, 74, died Dec. 24, 2016, at Amita Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
   Susan grew up and went to school in New York State. In 1962, she earned an associate’s degree from Bennett College in Milbrook, N.Y., and moved to the Chicago area with her former husband, John Purdy.
   Susan loved to laugh, and she loved music. A longtime member of the Union Church of Hinsdale, she was an active member of the music board and the adult bell choir, and spent countless hours as a chaperon for the youth bell choir. She played the piano for many years and her baby grand piano was one of her prized possessions. In her later years she provided child care services for several families and thoroughly enjoyed time spent with young children.
   She is survived by her found children, John, Jennifer (John Sheehan), Matthew (Martha) and David; her six grandchildren, John, Christopher, Clark, Grace, Katie and Luke; and her sisters, Mimi (Tom) Love-Nicholson and Betsy Love.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield Ave.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made online to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org.

Barbara Virden
  
Barbara Virden, 82, died Feb. 17, 2017, in Hinsdale, where she and her husband, John, continued to live after his retirement.
   Born in Crowville, La., Mrs. Virden was the daughter of the late Sidney Lee Payne Sr. and the late Roberta Hendricks Payne. She was a graduate of Central High School in Delhi, La., and Northeast State College in Monroe, La. She taught physical education and sponsored the drill team at Terrebonne High School in Houma, La., where she met the love of her life.
   In 1958, she married John S. Virden of Jackson, Miss., in Delhi. In 1959 they were blessed with the birth of their first son, John Jr. They were blessed again in 1961 and 1965 with the birth of their son, James, and daughter, Jammie Lynn, in Baton Rouge, La.
   Family life was always a special joy for Mrs. Virden. She reveled in the activities and accomplishments of J., Regina, James, Cindy, Jammie and Todd and granddaughter Felicia.       She particularly enjoyed creating special memories for the whole family around birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas.
   Mrs. Virden was blessed with a genuine caring spirit which extended to all she knew and with whom she had contact whether they be family, friends or neighbors. She enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, shopping for presents and most importantly, her family.
   She was preceded in death by her husband John S. Virden Sr.; and her siblings, Paul Payne, Charles Payne, Jerry Payne, Helen Mitchell and Anita Faye Payne.
She is survived by her three children, John S. (Regina) Virden Jr., James Rodney (Cindy) Virden and Jammie Lynn (Todd) Hassell; her granddaughter, Felicia Virden; her siblings, Sidney Lee (Joyce) Payne Jr., Perry (Florice) Payne and Elaine (James) Merryman; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Payne, Eva Payne and Faye Payne; and many nieces and nephews.
   A service was held Feb. 22 in Jackson, Miss.
   Sullivan Funeral Home in Hinsdale handled the arrangements.
