OBITUARIES:  (published May 24, 2018)

Robert H. Johnson
  
Robert H. Johnson, 83, died May 17, 2018, at his home in Oak Brook.
   Robert was born in 1934 to Robert Hugh Johnson and Kathleen (McEleroy) Johnson in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Pelham High School in Pelham, N.Y., earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and a master’s of business administration from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., in 1961. Active in ROTC, he served his country as an Army 1st lieutenant from 1955-57. Bob worked in the insurance industry as a financial consultant for 55 years, helping individuals plan for their futures and protect their families. His career began with Mutual of New York Life Insurance Co. and continued with AXA Advisors. Bob helped the Dominican Nuns in Westmont to open the Fran Center and was also instrumental in the founding of the Sexton Montessori School.       His hobbies included cooking, photography, gardening, and sailing. Long known for his positive outlook on life and his witty sense of humor, Bob volunteered for the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation and the Lurie Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Clinic.
   He is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Bier; his children, Ann Mason, Jane (Andrew) Abu, Bob (Kelly) Johnson and Mary (Leland) Wilhoite; his stepchildren, John (Kim Brown) Bier and David (Cathy) Bier; his grandchildren, Matt Mason, Molly (Chris) Houchens, Michael Abu, Catie Abu, Mary Abu, Bobby Johnson, Liam Johnson, Sarah Wilhoite, Thomas Wilhoite and Lucille Wilhoite.
   A funeral Mass was said May 21 at St. Mary of Gostyn Church in Downers Grove.          Interment was private.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made online to Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago at luriechildrens.org.

Diane Jean Markley
  
Diane Jean Markley, 77, died May 14, 2018.
   Diane was born in 1941 in Evanston to Rudolph and Martha Scheiner and grew up in Mount Prospect and Oak Park. She was an executive secretary at Borg-Warner in the 1960s and early 1970s until leaving the company to raise her two sons. Diane was highly intelligent, quick-witted, kind, generous and always placed the welfare of others highest on her list of priorities. She will be deeply missed.
   She was preceded in death by her parents.
   She is survived by her children, Craig (Min Jung Kim) of Hinsdale and Kyle Markley; her siblings, Marlene (Robert) Failing and William (Betty) Scheiner; her nieces and nephew, Marcia Fisk, Sandi Carlton and Robert Failing; and her cousin, Marvin Haas.
   Services are private. Interment is at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions and donations can be directed to the American Red Cross.
   Sullivan Funeral Home in Hinsdale handled the arrangements.

Arthur Edwards Odegard
  
Arthur Edwards Odegard Jr., 92, a 70-year resident of Hinsdale, died May 16, 2018, at Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale.
   He was born in Chicago to Marie, nee Dolf, and Arthur Edwards Odegard Sr., and raised in Western Springs.
   Arthur attended Lyons Township High School, Lyons Junior College and the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity. He graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in engineering. A World War II veteran who served directly under Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Japan, Arthur was honored to be a part of the Veteran’s History Project for the United States Library of Congress in the digitized collection. He was the proprietor of Odegaard’s Laundry and Cleaners in Western Springs and Hinsdale, respectively; a founding partner of Odegaard Properties; a member, Sunday school teacher, chairman and treasurer of the Hinsdale Evangelical Covenant Church; treasurer for the Monroe School Parent Teacher Organization; a member of the Hinsdale Jaycees, Hinsdale Kiwanis, the Hinsdale Zoning Board of Appeals, the Civic Advisory Board for Hinsdale Hospital and the Western Springs & Hinsdale Chambers of Commerce. He served as president of the West Suburban Council for the Boy Scouts of America and received the Lord-Baden Powell Award for Scouting Excellence. Arthur was a member of the Illinois Orchid Society, an avid fisherman, gardener and reader who spent winters at Point Whitecap in Venice, Fla., and summers at Lone Tree Island on Rainy Lake in Ontario, Canada.
   He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a loyal Christian and a patriot.
   He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Aina Nelson Odegard; and his grandson, James Kennedy Jr.
   He is survived by his children, Patricia Odegard Kennedy, Arthur Edwards Odegard III, Judith Odegard (Mark) Yannello and Mark Nelson (Linda) Odegard; and his grandchildren, Jeanne Marie Kennedy, Ashley Taylor Yannello, Chelsea Anne Yannello and Tyler Thomas Yannello.
   Memorials may be made to Hinsdale Evangelical Covenant Church, 412 S. Garfield St., Hinsdale, IL 60521.
   Interment was private at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.

Elenor Marie Siemer
  
Eleanor Marie Siemer passed away May 18, 2018, at her home in Bright Oaks Assisted Living in Aurora.
   Born on a farm in Western Springs, Eleanor moved to Hinsdale with her family to live on a farm which is now known as Graue Mill Condominiums. Eventually her family settled in Clarendon Hills.
   Eleanor was married to Clifford F. Siemer at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Wheaton in November 1949 and resided in the Siemer family home on Wiesbrook Road in Wheaton.
   A 22-year lung cancer survivor, Eleanor lost her long struggle with COPD and passed peacefully at 1:10 a.m. surrounded by her family.
   Eleanor dedicated her life to helping and giving to others. She left her mark in the lives of the young 4H club children she led in career paths and later moved on as an employment consultant for Murphy Employment and Personnel Pool of Oak Brook. Her infectious personality and penchant for bringing people together in community left a mark on all she touched.
   Born the only daughter to Carl and Eleanor Marie Zitzka, she joins her parents and brothers Carl, George, Edward and Richard in death.
   She is survived by her four children, Karen Howard-Granger, Gail (Dan) Mesch, Lynn (Juan) Montemayor and Robert (Dana) Siemer; her grandchildren, the Rev. Tony (Caroline) Howard, Dan (Katie) Mesch, Chris (Maggie) Mesch, Carl (Liz Henderson) Verive, Michael Verive, Juan (Wendy) Montemayor, Tony Montemayor, Riah Johnson, Cade Johnson, and Jase Williams; 12 great-grandchildren; her brother, Harry (Charlotte) Zitzka; and many nieces and nephews.
   A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Bright Oaks, 1340 River St., Aurora. A Memorial service will be held with prayers being said at 1:30 p.m.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association online at lung.org.

Norma Sommer
  
Norma Sommer, 99, passed away on May 18, 2018, surrounded by her family at her home in Hinsdale.
   She was born in 1918 in Chicago to Jim and Nora Kelly.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and her sisters, Muriel (Joe) von Albade, Virginia (Bob) Cook and Marion (George) Whitting.
   She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Muriel von Albade (Jim Troch), Michelle (Ken) Pecho, Joe von Albade, Jim (Diana) von Albade, Kelly (Cheryl) Cook, Pat (Warner) Young, Colleen (John) Dangler, Kathy Cook Donley, Laura (Bob) Wise, Nancy (Mike) Faber, Mary (Pat) Honan, Jim (Nancy) Whitting; and many grandnieces and -nephews and great-great-grandnieces and -nephews.
   A funeral Mass was said May 23 at Notre Dame Parish in Clarendon Hills. Interment was at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
   Memorials may be made online to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org.

John M. Trilla
  
John M. Trilla Jr., 68, formerly of Hinsdale, passed away peacefully in his sleep May 19, 2018.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Janice C. Trilla.
   He is survived by his siblings, Linda (Paeter) DiDonato, Pamela Trilla, Barry and Frank (Laura) Trilla; and his nieces and nephews, Heather, Peter (Kelly), Sarah, Barry Jr. (fiancé Anna), Grace, Alexis (Bill) and Luke.
   Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main St., Downers Grove.
   Interment will be private.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois online at nkfi.org appreciated.
