OBITUARIES:  (published June 13, 2019)

Mary Katharine Cultas Gross
Mary Katharine Coultas Gross passed away May 21, 2019.
Katharine, 94, was born Mary Katharine Coultas in Peoria in 1924 to Wilbur and Katharine Coultas. She chose to be known by her middle name, Katharine (or ‘Kackey Coco’), after refusing to respond when her kindergarten teacher called her Mary.
Katharine earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1946. She worked for a short time at University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago until deciding to attend graduate school at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Katharine graduated with a master’s degree in microbiology in 1953.
She started working in the research lab for Sloan-Kettering in New York City in 1955 before being transferred to the Rye, N.Y., location. There, her volunteer lab assistant was Jane Kettering Lombard from Hinsdale. After marrying Albert P. Gross in 1968, she left Sloan-   Kettering and took the lab supervisor position with New York Hospital. Katharine’s research was published three times, in June 1975, May 1978 and October 1979. She retired in 1988.
After Albert’s passing in September 1995, Katharine spent her time traveling with The New York Natural History Museum and volunteering as a docent at Central Park Zoo. After numerous trips to Africa and the prompting of family, she moved to the Lakeview neighborhood near Lincoln Park Zoo in the spring of 2002.
Katharine quickly re-assimilated to her hometown and began volunteering, taking trips and supporting the zoo. She loved her sponsored gorilla, Kathe, and her cats, Max (Maximillion) and Sonny (Son of Thor).
She always had a flair for making friends and people feel welcome and loved.
She is survived by her sisters, Jane Marlowe Foster and Ann (Robert) Kondalski; her stepchildren, Nancy Gross Blase (Chuck Goldstein), Betsy Gross (Robert) Holland and Edward Ted Gross; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Ken) Madison, Eric (Cindy) Blase and Neil Gross; her nine great-grandchildren; her nieces, Ann (Pat Achey) Gauger, Kristi (Mark) Clark and Katie Miller; and her nephews, Dan Gauger, Michael (Lucia) Foster, Jim (Lauren) Foster, Steve Foster, Kevin Coultas and Scott (AnneMarie) Miller. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at King-Bruwaert, 6101 County Line Road, Burr Ridge.
She was cremated and her ashes combined with her those of her husband.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to King-Bruwaert, 6101 County Line Road, Burr Ridge, IL 60527.
Adolf Funeral Home in Willowbrook handled the arrangements.
