OBITUARIES:  (published Dec. 6, 2018)

Ernestine Rashid Delaney
  
Ernestine Rashid Delaney, 89, of Willowbrook, passed away peacefully Nov. 29, 2018.
   She was born in 1929 in Keokuk, Iowa, to Farris and Gladys Kay Rashid.
   She graduated from Ft. Madison High School in Iowa in 1947 as the salutatorian. In 1951 Ernestine graduated with a bachelor’s in home economics from the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She went on to study at the University of Michigan.    She had a career as a dietitian at several Chicago hospitals and later taught culinary skills at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft. Madison, where she retired.
   In 1956 she married the love of her life, Dwight Francis Delaney. Together they had six beautiful children whom Ernestine raised on her own after Dwight lost his battle with cancer at the young age of 40. She stayed in the Chicago area for some time after his death and then moved back to Ft. Madison to be closer to her parents and sister. After her retirement, she moved back to the Chicago area to be near her children.
   She enjoyed cooking, dancing, music and being with her family. She was proud of her Lebanese heritage and loved the annual Rashid family reunions. Ernestine was witty, smart and had a genuine caring demeanor. She always looked out for others, and even in her last few years, she helped other residents in the nursing home and made sure they were taken care of.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight; her daughter, Janice Delaney Alcaraz; her stepmom, Rose “Sarah” Cline; and her sister, Delores Pollpeter.
   Ernestine is survived by her children, Nanette Delaney, Dwight Delaney, Sue Clanton, Jennifer (Rick) Rigley and Dawn (Rob) Conrad; her 10 grandchildren; her great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
   Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 8, followed by a memorial service at noon at Adolf Funeral Home, 7000 S. Madison St., Willowbrook.
   Burial will be private at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Glenwood.

Mary Jane Gasaway
  
Mary Jane Gasaway, nee Klotz, 93, formerly of Hinsdale, Oak Brook and Western Springs, passed away peacefully Nov. 27, 2018.
   Mary Jane was born in 1925 in Evanston to Josephine and Frank Klotz and raised in Berwyn. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues parish and a proud graduate of Nazareth Academy class of 1941. She remained active in the Nazareth Academy Alumni group throughout her adult life.
   As a couple Mary Jane and Chester formed CH Gasaway Construction in the 1950s. They built many custom homes throughout Timber Lake, Hinsdale and Oak Brook until finally retiring in 1990. The many friendships formed with their clients and business associates remained for life.
   She was a gracious host who enjoyed entertaining friends and family in her home. She is especially remembered for her Christmas evening open houses, where all of her extended family would gather to reconnect and celebrate the season.
   She and Chester loved traveling, and some of her favorite memories were of boating at The Abbey on Geneva Lake, Wis., and winters spent in Naples, Fla.
   Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Chester H Gasaway.
   She is survived by her children, Dennis “D.J.” (Sally) and David (Sally); and her grandchildren, Shawn and Lauren.
   The family offers special thanks to the many kind and generous family, friends, care givers and the staff of The Birches who supported Mary Jane with compassion, thoughtfulness and companionship through the end of her life. 
   A funeral Mass will be said at 10 today, Dec. 6, at St. Isaac Jogues Church, Fourth and Clay streets, Hinsdale.
   Interment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made online to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at stjude.org or Honor Flight at honorflight.org.

Mary I. Mahoney
  
Mary I. Mahoney (nee Sheridan), 82, of Hinsdale and Breezy Point, N.Y., formerly of Rockville Centre, N.Y. passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 30, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
   She was born in 1936 in Brooklyn to Martin and Anna Marie Sheridan from County Mayo, Ireland.
   Mary graduated with a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University in New York and The Institute of Juvenile Research at University of Illinois Chicago. She worked as an assistant professor at Barat College before moving to nonprofit family service organizations as a licensed clinical counselor.
   She fondly remembered lasting friendships built in Rockville Centre and Hinsdale. She spent summers at Breezy Point and co-hosted St Patrick’s Day parties for over 40 years in New York, N.Y., with many friends and extended family.
   Mary was an active member of CHRP (Christ Renews His Parish) with Notre Dame Church in Clarendon Hills and was one of the founding members of the first Special Education Parents Teachers Association in Rockville Centre.
   She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jerry; her children, Gerard Jr. (Joann), Suzanne (Kevin) O’Donnell, Brian Sheridan Mahoney and Kristin (Scott) D’Allessio; her grandchildren, Meaghan, Gerard III, Tricia and Allison Mahoney and Anna, Sarah and Eileen O’Donnell; her siblings, James (Ann) Sheridan, Margie (the late Kevin) Glynn and Eileen (the late Paul) Kinloch; her siblings-in-law, Joan (the late James) Mahoney, Ann Sheridan and David and Peggy Mahoney.; and many nieces and nephews.
   Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Towers Funeral Home, 2681 S. Long Beach Road, Oceanside, N.Y.
   A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, N. Y.   Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, New York.
   A celebration of life will be held at 21 Spinning Wheel in Hinsdale at a later date.
