Mildred Ann Smiley
Mildred “Millie” Ann Smiley, 76, passed away Dec. 6, 2017.
Millie was born in 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the height of World War II.
She lost her father during the war and her stepfather when she was 14. She experienced great sadness and loneliness and eventually developed depression in the years that followed.
She met her future husband in college and soon her family grew to include two daughters. A divorce followed, and she was left alone in Hinsdale to raise the girls.
Although she struggled with mental illness for many years, she somehow managed to always remember her grandchildren and her special great-nephew. Whether it was a blank card with just her signature or a handwritten note with a dollar enclosed, her grandchildren always knew she had not forgotten them.
She eventually moved in with her daughter, Tina, in Minnesota. She loved watching her oldest grandson, Charles Kotulski, dance in the Mankato Ballet as the Nutcracker. She loved the times she spent shopping with her grandson, Eddie Kotulski and the egg drop soup he bought for her at the mall. She loved the church lessons her granddaughter, Breigha Kotulski, recited to her from the church worship service bulletin. She loved the talks she had with her granddaughter, Marzhan Smiley, whose singing abilities made her very proud. She loved the times she spent with her youngest grandson, Samuel Kotulski, playing Go Fish, watching Pit Bulls and Parolees and talking about life and people. She loved talking to her goddaughter, Kristen Hall, and loved deeply her great-nephew, Alec Hall.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn Louise Hall, nee Froscher; her father, Charles Author Stafford; her stepfather, John W. Hall; and her brother, John Hall.
Millie is survived by her two daughters, Susan Smiley and Tina (Dr. Jeff) Kotulski; her five grandchildren, Charles, Eddie, Breigha and Samuel Kotulski and Marzhan Smiley; her goddaughter, Kristen Hall; and her grand-nephew, Alec Hall.
A celebration of Millie’s life will take place in the spring, her favorite season, at Between the Bridges Healing Center in Mankato.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made online to the ASCPA at or to the Millie Smiley Memorial Fund, Between the Bridges Healing Center, 45 Teton Lane, Mankato, MN 56001.
