What's the story on hosta? Homeowners looking to brighten up a shady garden spot or set off their front walkway might want to stop by The Community House Sunday for the Northern Illinois Hosta Society's annual auction and plant sale (see Page 20 for details). Presiding over the 1:30 p.m. auction will be Mark Zilis, a leading expert on the plant as evidenced by his books, "The Hostapedia: An Encyclopedia of Hostas" and "Mark Zilis' Field Guide to Hostas." Zilis earned his maste...
Hinsdale police officer Mike Coughlin could have handed in his badge in January after 30 years of service. But duty kept him on a few more months. "I wanted to finish out the school year," said the longtime juvenile and crime prevention officer and familiar figure to current and former Hinsdale youth. "I didn't want to leave them high and dry." Off Cough, as he is affectionately called, retired from the force earlier this month, ending a community-focused career in which he...
"It's not about staying young. It's about acknowledging what is truly happening to you." That was among the insights Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich shared with about 250 audience members during a talk at The Community House May 1, co-sponsored by King-Bruwaert House. Among the topics she covered was what it means to age and how to redefine that latter stage of life, drawing on her own experience watching and walking with her mother in her final...
Up until a few of years ago, Lop Chin could climb ladders "like a monkey" and hold his own against his son on the ping pong table. Turning 60, however, seemed to usher in a sensory slowdown and greater susceptibility to aches and pains. "All of sudden I can't see the ball anymore. He's kickin' my a--! It's not good," Chin said with a laugh. "My body can no longer do things that my mind thinks I can do. Now things I would normally do myself, I hire out." Chin, 62, is in his...
The number 85 is a target for Hinsdale's Bill Brandenburg. He's already reached it in terms of age; the goal now is to match it (or lower) with his golf stroke total. "I shoot my age fairly regularly," Brandenberg remarked, noting his senior championship at Oak Brook Golf Club in 2017. "I play usually three rounds a week." Retired since 2001 from a career in chemical engineering, Brandenburg said he's glad he stayed on the job until he was 67, a little past the typical point...
With the first day of school in Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 set for Friday, Aug. 23, district board members got reports from administrators on readiness for the 2019-20 school year. John Munch, assistant superintendent of human resources, told the board that the teaching staff, as in years past, has both those with considerable experience and promising young ones. “It’s nice to have a good mix of experiences coming in as this cohort,” Munch said. A couple of late resignations were addressed, he noted...
Rohan Chadha believes America will truly thrive as the world's leading democracy if its citizenry is educated on current affairs and endeavors to understand all sides of an issue. Oh, and have respect for the rule of law. "Those are the most important responsibilities," said Rohan, a Gower Middle School eighth-grader and winner of this year's essay contest sponsored by Hinsdale American Legion Post 250. Chadha's social studies teacher encouraged his students to participate in...

Super Bowl LIII was fast approaching, and Chris Revord was determined to be in his Hinsdale home, not a Hinsdale hospital bed. His battle with multiple myeloma was taking a heavy physical toll, but it couldn't touch his resolve. "He wanted out so badly, and they didn't really want to let him out," said his wife, Callie, recalling a highly charged exchange between Chris and his doctor over the matter. "So they got him fixed up to come home. And that was actually the last time...

What's involved in styling a marionette show? Puppeteers like Dave Herzog work in full view of their audience. But that doesn’t mean he’s always seen. “I remember one boy saying to me after a show, ‘How did you make yourself invisible during the show?’ ” Herzog related with a laugh. The entertainer and his marionette magic will appear at the Hinsdale Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 29 (see Page 23 for details). Now in his fifth decade of dazzling young and old wit...

Hinsdale's Sarah Thornton was surprised to capture victory at her first golf tournament of the Illinois Junior Golf Association season back in mid-April. Thornton's next match was May 11 at Deerfield Golf Club, where she triumphed again. And again June 11 at Maple Meadows Golf Club in Wood Dale. And again the next day...
Hinsdale will be among the communities impacted most profoundly by the proposed graduated state income tax structure, a Chicago Tribune study has found. Nearly 30 percent of village residents, or 2,288 tax filers, in the 60521 ZIP code in 2016 earned more than $250,000, the threshold for higher tax rates if a constitutional amendment to change Illinois’ flat income tax to a graduated income tax is approved by voters in the November 2020 election. Currently the state taxes income at 4.95 percent for everyone. In May, the I...
