  • Life on the 'prairie'

    Laura LaPlaca|Updated Aug 21, 2024

Growing up some of my favorite books were the "Little House on the Prairie" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The author and I had the same name. As a third-grader, that was enough to pique my interest. It grew beyond that as I read with fascination about the family's adventures and their day-to-day life. Building your own house, cooking over a fireplace, reading by candlelight. Even as an adult, I love to learn about life in those times. Perhaps that led to my many years as a G...

  • Songs of summer best when belted out in a crowd

    Laura LaPlaca|Updated Jul 5, 2023

Summertime is concert time! Do you remember your first concert? Mine was Sly and the Family Stone. Can't say I was a big fan, but as a college freshman the invitation was hard to turn down. The house next door to us is going to be torn down. I know that isn't news in this town where old homes are torn down everyday. But there are many things that happen all the time - every day - and until they happen to you, well, they don't mean as much. I should add that while it is accurate to say that homes are torn down all the time, it is not accurate to say that it has happened on our block. In fact, except for a couple of homes on the edges of our block, it, and the home...

  • Comfort food key for unnamed time

    Laura LaPlaca|Updated Aug 19, 2020

I am challenging myself to write this column without (not once) mentioning that word we are all tiring of. Here goes ... I would not consider myself a good cook. Adequate, yes. I fed my children fairly nutritious food - although an occasional Pop-Tart or chicken nugget wasn't unheard of. Now that the kids are gone, I have even less motivation in the kitchen. I am reminded of my Norwegian mother's sentiment: the only reason I have a kitchen is because it came with the house!...
