Could the month of May be busier than December? With a flurry of end-of-school-year activities and attempting to plan for long summer days, it sure seems possible. Ask a librarian and the answer is a definitive yes. While we were busy preparing for our inaugural HPL Con earlier this month, we were also juggling school visits, planning our Summer Reading Club and booking summer entertainment. No vacation for us - we are ready for the busy summer season at the library! Starting...
Many of us set an intention, select a word to focus on, or resolve to do something at the start of a brand new year. In other words, we make a resolution; a firm decision to do (or not do) something. By this point in January though, it is estimated that two-thirds have already dropped their resolutions (some studies even cite specific days, with Jan. 17 and 19 being THE days to give up the goal). And speaking of specific, one reason resolutions fail is that they are too...
Every year, all 645 public libraries in Illinois submit an annual report to the state library. We answer questions about how many people attended programs (2,724), the number of books checked out (194,144) and total number of cardholders (8,794). This report helps legislators understand the scale and scope of the work that is funded by state grants and provides a resource for libraries to use in benchmarking their services against other libraries. Questions are added or...
Changing colors, warm apple cider and cooler days must mean October is around the corner. Anne (of Green Gables fame) once professed, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” We tend to agree. With school back in session, new routines down pat and summer reading in the rearview, we are excited for the fall-inspired events on the horizon. For the full listing, visit https://www.hinsdalelibrary.info/events. The month kicks off with Hinsdale native Olivia Sobie...
When we closed the library on March 15, 2020, we could not imagine how long it would be until we finally opened the doors again. Staff worked from home by recording storytime sessions with their own kids, creating recipes using cookbooks in our digital collection, and leaving chalk messages on the library's sidewalk. A year later, our hours, services, and programs are still evolving. Even before the pandemic, libraries have always adapted to meet community needs and deliver...
Three years ago, the Hinsdale Public Library was thrilled to be selected as local author Cristina Henriquez’s favorite place. The New Yorker Radio Hour visited the library on a late October afternoon with Cristina to record a segment for their podcast, which aired in December 2017. As she toured her favorite library haunts, Cristina took a turn down the fiction aisle including authors whose last names start with “H” to find her book, “The Book of Unknown Americans,” on HPL’s shelves. We were delighted to be acknowledge...
A message from library's board president, Julie Liesse: "Those of us on the board of trustees understand - personally - how much our community relies on the library for entertainment and resources. We were disappointed to have to close the building, but obviously the safety of our patrons and staff comes first. "But we're so lucky to be 21st century library cardholders, with access to tons of wonderful books and engaging movies and TV shows online - as well as all our online...
Even though we start planning for our summer events and reading club in January, it still feels like summer passes in the blink of an eye. We could lament the shorter days and cooler weather, but we have so much planned for fall that we can't complain. First, we want to thank our nearly 2,000 summer readers. Whether you said "Hi" to us at the farmers market, came in weekly to spin the prize wheel or checked out a few extra beach reads, we appreciate you incorporating the...
