A new national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — 988 — will offer another option for individuals experiencing a crisis or any other kind of emotional distress. The Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Mental Health launched the free, confidential lifeline July 16. Trained professionals will offer compassionate care related to suicide, mental health and/or substance abuse to individuals and concerned family members, friends and caregivers. “This resource resonates with us at the foundation because it really does advan...
Working remote is nothing new. I've done it while I've been sick, while my husband had COVID and the first two years my daughter went to sleep-away camp in Holland, Mich. But I've never worked remotely "on the road," so to speak, where I've stayed in a different hotel every night. That's what I did last week as I accompanied my husband, Dan, on sales calls. We dropped Ainsley off near the shores of Lake Michigan Monday and hit the road Tuesday, traveling some 558 miles to...
A lawsuit filed against the village by the Department of Justice and Trinity Sober Living has cost the village more than $1.5 million, with more than $689,000 billed this year. “I feel bad about the size of the legal bills, but we are a defendant in these cases,” Village President Tom Cauley told The Hinsdalean. “We didn’t bring these cases.” Cauley hired Chicago powerhouse Winston & Strawn to defend the village in the case, which claims Hinsdale violated the Fair Housing Act by not allowing Trinity to operate a sober liv...
Signs provide us with all kinds of information. "Slow, children playing" lets us know kids reside on a particular block. (Since kids live on many blocks that don't have such signs, these warnings also might indicate worried parents live on the block as well.) Signs indicating downtown Hinsdale and the Robbins Park subdivision are on the National Register of Historic Places demonstrate the importance of the village's past to Hinsdaleans - or at least to those who are...
Sarah was about four months pregnant when she received news no mother ever wants to hear. She was told her baby had triploidy and would not survive. “She had an underdeveloped brain, underdeveloped kidneys, underdeveloped heart. I don’t think she had a spleen. It was pretty heart-wrenching when I found that out,” said Sarah, a Hinsdale resident who asked that I not use her last name. She had two choices: Wait for her baby to die and deliver her stillborn or terminate the p...
At the time Chris Bruton graduated from college, women were encouraged to follow one of two career paths - nursing or teaching. She planned to be an English teacher, only to discover the job market was flooded with women with the same ambition. "Life takes a different turn. You never know," said Bruton. A career in municipal government never occurred to her at the time, she said. "I had no idea. None. However, had I had a sense of it when I went away to school, that this was...
Hinsdale police are working to determine whether two early morning burglaries Tuesday are connected to incidents reported last week. A safe containing $1,200 was stolen from Jimmy John's, 777 N. York Road, in Gateway Square at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Hinsdale Police Chief Brian King told The Hinsdalean. Suspects used a landscaping brick to break the window. Shortly after, a chair was used to shatter the window at Starbucks, 500 E. Ogden Ave. The office was ransacked but nothing was ta...
Writing an opinion column is often a challenging thing to do, especially when events leave you speechless. I was standing in front of the office Monday, just after the final entry of the village's parade had passed by, when I heard about a much different end to the parade in Highland Park from assistant village manager Brad Bloom. As the day passed, we learned more and more about the horrific events and its victims. Six killed. More than two dozen injured, either shot or hurt...
Hinsdale High School District 86 launched its new website yesterday morning. The district has been working with a company called Finalsite to improve the overall appearance of its website and make it a more effective resource for students, staff, families and community members. The upgrade is part of Goal 4 of the district's strategic plan, which focuses on family and community connections. "From a communication department standpoint, we're always assessing and evaluating all...
Peggy Smego lived two lives with her husband, Mark - the one before his 2004 stroke and the one after. And yet both were characterized by Mark's love of family, zest for life and unshakable faith. The two met when Peggy, 23 at the time, was being set up with her roommate's male friend, who brought Mark along to make it a foursome. "It was a blind date gone awry," Peggy said. "It was a funny start. There was like a glow around Mark when I met him." The two were engaged six...
One of my favorite tasks at work is to read the submission from our contributing columnist each week. Our writers this past year were Bill Barre, John Bourjaily, Bret Conway, Kelly Abate Kallas, Mistie Lucht (until she moved out of town) Lisa Seplak, Lex Silberburg and student writer Isabella Terry. Perhaps you know one - or more -as a friend or neighbor. Perhaps you've been reading their columns all year thinking, "Hey, I'd like to do that!" Now is your chance. Every year a h...
Community Consolidated Elemen-tary District 181 Board members unanimously approved a fiscal year 2023 budget Monday that forecasts almost $76.8 million in operating revenues and about $68.2 million in operating expenses. The total budget for all funds projects $80 million in revenues and $81.7 million in expenses. Revenues are expected to increase 2.8 percent. One factor is the anticipated increase in corporate personal property replacement tax receipts from $1.14 million this fiscal year to $1.17 million next year. Both...
We'd read the reviews of the concert. Perused the set list. Compulsively checked the Baltimore forecast on our phones' weather app (which at one point was calling for thunderstorms!). And then, before we knew it, Dan, Ainsley, my birth mom and I were sitting in Orioles Park at Camden Yards, waiting for Paul McCartney to take the stage. I have always been more of a Rolling Stones fan, but Ainsley has loved the Beatles ever since she discovered Channel 18 on Sirius XM. She's...
By Pamela Lannom [email protected] AdventHealth Hinsdale Hospital nurse Juliet Godar finds healing whenever she is close to water. Mark Bondarenko, who works in spiritual care, heals by exploring Yosemite National Park. CEO Adam Maycock heals by spending time with his daughters. "Whether it's hot or cold, we find time to celebrate what's right and embrace nature. Every time I spend even a few minutes with my daughters, my mental load is lightened and I remember that...
The first year Bob Barber was head coach of the boys swim and dive team, Hinsdale Central won its first state title in 26 years. This past year, he led the boys and girls swim teams to second-place finishes. And he was named the Illinois Swimming and Diving Association best coach of the year for boys and girls. Talk to him about his many accolades, though, and he's quick to credit others. "My accomplishments are through the work of these kids," said Barber, who was a student...
While planning our July 1993 wedding, stressed by my full-time graduate studies and Dan's full-time job and living in two different cities and juggling family input, we briefly considered running off to Vegas and getting married by an Elvis impersonator. Both lifelong church-goers, we decided against it, agreeing that it wouldn't feel like we were really married. But we promised each other that we would go to Vegas for our 10th anniversary and renew our vows in front of an...
A team of individuals from several departments work together to keep students in Hinsdale High School District 86 safe, security director Kevin Simpson told board members at their June 2 meeting. “There are some unsung heroes that are involved,” Simpson said, pointing to deans and counselors. “They are all vital to our threat assessment teams. Our threat assessment teams are ahead of the curve of where I think most districts are.” Simpson presented the security update in the wake of the May 24 Uvalde school shooting, when 19...
Winter coats are common attire for Illinois residents when they head to the polls for the primary election. They won’t be necessary this year. The Illinois primary, which typically takes place March 15, was moved to June 28 when Senate Bill 825 became law last year. This isn’t the first time the primary date has changed. In 2008, it was moved to early February to help bolster the chances of then-Sen. Barack Obama is his bid for the presidency. It was held again in February in 2010 and moved back to March in 2012. The pri...
For the third time in four years and the 27th time in history, the Hinsdale Central boys tennis team won the state title Saturday. The team garnered 49 out of 52 possible points at the IHSA meet May 26-28 in Arlington Heights, easily beating second-place New Trier, which had 29 points. "In the end, the team did perform as they had all season, which is dominant," coach John Naisbitt said. "(You're) one turned ankle, one flu, one COVID diagnosis away from things changing. You...
Maybe it's the final episodes of "This is Us" that has me thinking about the different landscapes, if you will, life offers us. Or it might be the fact that the things I thought would go "back to normal" after COVID changed in such a way during the pandemic that we can never go back. More on that later. I've been watching "This is Us" since the beginning. I knew I would be hooked from the second I saw a trailer showing Randall knocking on a door of the man he believes to be...
Ever notice the stars in relief on the top corners of the front door of 25 E. First St.? Or the red bell mounted on the brick wall? Both are clues as to the original use of the building, which now is home to Hinsdale Bank and Trust. The Colonial Revival building there and the adjoining one were built in 1935 as Works Progress Administration projects to house the village's police and fire stations. They were designed by Hinsdale architect Harford Field. The fire station had...
Three years ago the Hinsdale American Legion Post 250 sponsored its last Memorial Day procession before COVID-19 interrupted so much of life as knew it. The annual event will return this Monday, May 30, stepping off at 10 a.m. from Third Street and Garfield Avenue, proceeding west on Third to Washington Street and then north to the Memorial Building at 19 E. Chicago Ave. There, at about 10:30 a.m., the Post will hold a Memorial Day service. The Names of the Honored Dead will...
We've all heard the flight attendant's speech: In the event the cabin loses pressure and the oxygen masks drop, secure your own mask before helping others. The directions might sound counterintuitive to those inclined to first tend to those in need of assistance. But if you don't take care of yourself, there's no way you'll be able to care for others. In the airplane example the instructions are clear and easy to follow. In many other situations in life, determining how to...
The Hinsdale Central boys gymnastics team placed seventh in the state this weekend earning 145.25 points, and senior Matthew Cihlar ended his career by earning three top-10 finishes in individual events and placing 11th in the all-around competition. Palatine captured the championship with 164.85 points. Cihlar said he went to the state meet Friday and Saturday at Hoffman Estates High School with an open mind. "I knew that I was in a pretty good position based off of my...
I'm often impressed by the young people I interview, whether they're elementary school students moderating a presentation by a NASA engineer or high school athletes recommended by their coaches for our weekly profile. I had the opportunity last week to witness the culmination of a semester's worth of work by local high school students in Community Memorial Foundation's Young Community Changemakers - or YC2 - program. Sixty teens were divided into two teams and given $15,000...
