  • A shave and a haircut raises quite a bit

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 26, 2021

Family and friendship provided motivation for organizers of the St. Baldrick's fundraiser last week at Hinsdale Central High School. Oh, and the coronavirus pandemic played a role as well. "He had the long COVID hair," boys varsity track coach Jim Kupres said of boys varsity wrestling coach Jason Hayes. "I had the long COVID hair. We asked if we could do our own shaving event, our own fundraiser." The organization they approached was St. Baldrick's, known to Kupres because...

  • Bridge a permanent reminder of Brooks' spirit

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 20, 2021

For three and a half years, plastic cups in the fence on the 47th Street bridge have reminded many of the courage young Brooks Tonn of Hinsdale displayed in his fight against cancer. The cups spell out two words: "Brooks Strong." Now Brooks, who passed away in December 2017 after a year-long battle with rhabdomyosarcoma, will be remembered in a more permanent way. The Illinois House of Representatives voted 118-0 May 12 to name the bridge the Brooks Edwin Tonn Memorial Bridge....

  • Lawrence's journey took unexpected path

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 20, 2021

By Pamela Lannom [email protected] When COVID-19 interrupted the boys 2020 track season at Hinsdale Central High School, assistant coach Noah Lawrence tried to put things in perspective for team members. He penned a poignant blog on March 14, reminding the student-athletes that baseball great Joe DiMaggio's career was interrupted for three seasons after he enlisted in the U.S. military following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Lawrence also wanted to remind the teens why...

  • HC pool space probably won't sit vacant

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 19, 2021

The Hinsdale High School District 86 Board seems willing to spend $870,000 to fill in the old pool at Hinsdale Central to create a flexible space, if the project can be paid for out of surplus operating funds. At a finance committee meeting in April, Josh Stephenson, chief financial officer, suggested using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds for the project. That idea met with some resistance when the full board met April 22. Another look at the budget, however, indicates those funds will not be needed,...

  • Teens appreciate opportunity to give back

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 19, 2021

Raising money to support an organization is one thing. Seeing the looks of joy and appreciation on the faces of people the nonprofit helps is something altogether different. "For me the most meaningful experience has been this event that we do - it's called 'See Santa,' " said Kelsey Condon, president of the Infant Welfare Society Junior Board. The event is held at the Angel Harvey Center in Chicago. Junior board members accompany adult members of the Hinsdale Chapter of the...

  • Police restraint saves armed teen's life

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 19, 2021

Break-ins at two luxury Hinsdale car dealerships early Monday morning could have ended in tragedy, Police Chief Brian King said. Police responded to an activated alarm at Continental Motor Sports, 420 E. Ogden Ave., shortly after 2:20 a.m. and pinned the suspects' vehicle against the building with two squad cars. Three suspects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. "The third is a 16-year-old juvenile that is holding the hand gun with a 30-round extended magazine clip," Ki...

Name: Kathleen Tobia Year: senior Hometown: Hinsdale When did you join the track team? My sophomore year. My brothers had always done track and cross country, so I always knew of it. When I quit gymnastics sophomore year, I knew running was what I wanted to do. How long did you do gymnastics? Thirteen years. (I quit because) I had injuries in both of my elbows, to the point where I couldn't write or brush my hair without pain. What do you enjoy most about track? I love that we...

Name: Ansh Shah Year: senior Hometown: Oak Brook When did you first start playing tennis? At 10 years old. I was playing a couple of sports when I was younger. I kind of just started at the park district. I started watching tennis a lot. I really admire Rafael Nadal. He's lefty and I'm lefty as well. Watching him got me motivated about the game. What do you enjoy most about the sport? I like the individuality of the sport. It's just you against another player. It just brings...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 12, 2021

Tired of take-out? Hinsdale restaurants have just the thing for you. Fourteen establishments are participating in Hinsdale Restaurant Week, which starts tomorrow, Friday, May 14, and runs through Sunday, May 23. They will offer indoor dining, outdoor dining (space and weather permitting) and, for folks who still prefer to eat at home, carryout. • And the winner is ... The Hinsdalean, part 2

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 12, 2021

I wouldn't call Jim Slonoff a liar. After all, he's my friend of more than 30 years and business partner here at The Hinsdalean. But he does, at times, play fast and loose with the truth. Someone called The Doings once with a question about a tree, which none of us could answer. I can't remember the specifics. But I know when Jim heard about it, he offered us a lengthy explanation about squirrels and nuts and the acidity of the soil. He sounded very convincing. And then I...

  • Historic homes don't have to be museums

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 12, 2021

Darlene Bingham is not a student of architecture. That doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate the beauty and charm of a 1920s house. "We we came in to see this house, I was just totally taken away," said Bingham, who moved to the home at 735 S. Garfield Ave. last summer. "I just couldn't believe the beauty inside. All these timeless pieces," she said, gesturing to the leaded glass window in the front door, the stained glass cover of an overhead light and carved wooden figures tha...

  • Mom's Day mix of mourning, celebrating this year

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 5, 2021

Charlie Harley stopped in Monday to let us know about the Armistice Day celebration in Burr Ridge May 15 — at which he will receive the Jack Schaus Patriot Award. I told him I wished I could come, but we are having a small memorial service for my mom, who died in November. “Of course you have to go to that,” Charlie said. “After all, you only ever have one mother.” “Well,” I responded. “I’ve got an interesting story for you.” And so I told him about being adopted and taking...

  • Competition is heating up for Devils

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 5, 2021

After missing out on an entire season last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hinsdale Central girls soccer and boys volleyball teams are working to get this year's seniors - and underclassmen - up to speed. Meanwhile the wrestling team, which was able to complete its season last year and sent two individuals to state, is competing at a completely different time of year and working through changes in wrestlers' weight classes. The teams' coaches offer a look at the athlete...

  • Juniorettes offers invitation to service

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 5, 2021

Finding the right volunteer opportunity can be a challenge - especially for a seventh-grader. Juniorettes - the junior board of the Hinsdale Junior Woman's Club - has helped Hinsdale's Laura Armstrong do just that. "I've learned that I can help in different ways and Juniorettes has opened my eyes to different things I can do to be able to help," said Armstrong, whose in seventh grade at Hinsdale Middle School. She has enjoyed dressing up to entertain pediatric cancer patients...

  • Farm girl returns to a revisioned farm

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 29, 2021

Irene Wood and her husband, Cary, didn't know the impact a three-day 2018 "glamping" trip in Big Sky, Mont., would have on their lives. "We had the best vacation we had had in forever," Irene Wood said. "It was so great, in fact, that when we got home, we said, 'Let's do this again but someplace closer to home.' " A quick Google search indicated that was not an option. No nearby glamping sites were listed. "You have to Google harder," her husband told her. "So I Googled...

  • Parenting is not easy, especially during pandemic

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 29, 2021

I had great dreams for myself as a parent before I became one. I was going to spend each and every day laughing with and enjoying my children (back when I thought I would have more than one). I remember thinking once that my best friend, who at the time was experiencing a trying moment with her 7- or 8-year-old twins, should just have a better sense of humor. Then things would go so much more smoothly. I now find that hilarious. Just last night I told Ainsley I don't have a...

  • Hinsdale hoping to reach bridge soon

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 28, 2021

What will summer in Hinsdale look like? It's hard to say. "It's been challenging because we've been planning everything with three scenarios," said Heather Bereckis, superintendent of parks and recreation for the village. The region is currently under Phase 4 restrictions, but Gov. JB Pritzker said Tuesday the state is "making progress" in its coronavirus metrics and could enter the bridge phase of its reopening plan soon - maybe within a week. "Every single event, every...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 28, 2021

Hinsdale Central students age 16 and older interested in receiving a COVID-19 vaccination will be able to get one at school next month. Superintendent Tammy Prentiss announced last week that she had arranged for the district to receive 6,000 Pfizer vaccinations through its partnership with Jewel Osco for students in Hinsdale High School District 86 and Downers Grove High School District 99. Clinics will be held May 20 at Hinsdale Central and May 26 at Downers North, with the second shots administered three weeks later, she...

  • HC pool supporters donate $1.6 million

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 28, 2021

After almost two years of fundraising, the Friends of the Don Watson Aquatic Center were able to present a $1.6 million donation to the Hinsdale High School District 86 Board last week. “It really was a pure team effort to get to this goal of raising $1.6 million,” Vince Allegra, a former stand-out swimmer at Hinsdale Central and fundraising committee member, said at the board’s April 22 meeting. The contribution made it possible for the district to build a 10-lane pool instead of the six-lane pool approved in the April 2019...

  • Challenges of COVID-19 continue in D86

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 21, 2021

More than $3 million in anticipated grant money will help Hinsdale High School District 86 cover the additional expenses of operating during a pandemic, Superintendent Tammy Prentiss said. “I would tell you these grants have been welcome relief,” she said Monday. “We would have really struggled without them. We would have had to make some very difficult decisions on what we were not going to do.” The district has received about $267,104 in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief fund allocations and is expecti...

  • Devils ready for busiest season so far

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 21, 2021

High school athletics has looked much different this school year, with COVID-19 restrictions moving sports from one season to another, limiting spectators and reducing the number of competitions. That trend continues as 10 Hinsdale Central teams begin this year's "summer" sports season. Five of those teams will have the opportunity to compete in state finals in June - baseball, softball, girls lacrosse, and boys and girls track and field. This is the first in a three-part...

  • Which films will I root for Sunday? Only two

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 21, 2021

I don't remember the last movie I saw in a theater. Do you? Ooh, wait - I do. I saw "Frozen 2" on March 8 of last year - the day after I was out much too late at the cast party for "Hinsdolopy," the 2020 Community Revue. (I discovered after the previous revue that watching a movie in a reclined seat with some snacks helps with post-show/post-party recovery.) Since then, I've seen "Troop Zero," "Onward" and "Soul" from the comfort of my family room, where the seats don't...

  • Teens support place that feels like home

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 21, 2021

The Community House is a place Hinsdale's Camryn Saltzman has grown up with - from preschool camps to Jodie Harrison basketball to Fortnightly. "In middle school I participated in the volunteer camp here," said Saltzman, a senior at Hinsdale Central. "I became a camp counselor for that after a few years of being a camper." Through that experience she got to know Marcie McGonagle, the former volunteer coordinator at The Community House, who talked to her about joining the...

  • Like everything else, it's all relative

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 15, 2021

For Hinsdale Central senior Jessica Miller, the school's spring musical, "The Theory of Relativity," resonates in more ways than one. "This show is really cool because it's about a bunch of different stories that are kind of strung together," Miller said. "It's really nice in this time of COVID, because we are able to work on a lot of things individually and bring them together." The closing song, "Nothing Without You," reflects the current emotional state of many people. "It...

  • Faith, service key for HHF Junior Board

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 14, 2021

Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Junior Board members learn important skills during their tenure - like leadership, service and communication. Over the past year, the board's executive committee has developed another area of expertise: adaptability. "This year was definitely an adjustment, and we call it a lost year, a building year to restructure the way a lot of things are done on the board," said senior Alegra Waverley of Hinsdale, who serves as the communications and...
