Today we officially kick off our coverage of the Tuesday, April 6, election for local school, village and library board members. Like everything else that has taken place over the past 10 months or so, our coverage will be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. You can read more about how we will conduct our interviews, what kinds of stories we will write and when they will run in the editorial above. My topic today is letters to the editor. We typically receive more letters to...
Jason Bier and Virginia Malinas will not appear on the April 6 ballot as candidates for the Community Consolidated District 181 Board. After holding a Zoom hearing Friday, the DuPage County Board of Elections upheld objections to their petitions. The race for four-year terms is no longer contested, with incumbent Bill Cotter and newcomers Mike Martin and Grace Shin the only remaining candidates for three open seats. Martin challenged the petitions filed by Malinas, on the grounds that she had not been a resident of the...
Voters will find three contested local races when they head to the polls Tuesday, April 6. Two are vying for a two-year term on the Community Consolidated District 181 Board, five are seeking four seats on the Hinsdale Public Library Board and 10 are competing for four spots on the Hinsdale High School District 86 Board. Those who are elected will have a full agenda, especially as the area continues to contend with the COVID-19 pandemic. District 181 In District 181,...
Voters will head to the polls Tuesday, April 6, to choose new board members for Community Consolidated District 181, Hinsdale High School District 86 and the Hinsdale Public Library. To help them make their decisions, The Hinsdalean reached out to current board members to ask them to describe what the job entails. District 181 Sarah Jakobsen said she didn’t have a true sense for the complexity of school district finances before her election to the District 181 Board in 2019. She does now. “I was not as engaged as a cit...
A former Hinsdale Central teacher will be the new assistant superintendent for human resources in Hinsdale High School District 86. “It feels like my whole career has brought me to this moment,” Cheryl Moore said Feb. 11 after the board voted 7-0 to appoint her to the position effective July 1. “I started teaching at Hinsdale Central right out of college,” she added. “It’s probably the best job I ever had and certainly the best time of my life.” Moore said she moved out of the state for personal reasons and then moved ou...
Name: Lainey Harvey Year: senior Hometown: Willowbrook When did you first start bowling? Freshman year. My friend at the time, she was going to try out and then she encouraged me to try out. At the time, I really knew nothing about bowling. At the first tryout, I did surprisingly well. What do you enjoy most about the sport? It's just a fun activity that you can kind of pick if it's competitive or not. How has COVID-19 affected competitions? It used to be three girls on one...
Perhaps you’ve heard the famous Albert Camus quote: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” I appreciate Camus’ message of resilience. Really, I do. But I am not feeling summer, invincible or any other type, within me. This winter — and in particular, this past week — has beaten me. Our high temps since Saturday have ranged from a mere 5 degrees to 24 on Tuesday, with lows ranging from -2 to 13. We might get up to 26 today, b...
Hinsdale High School District 86 students will have the opportunity to take AP exams in person and on paper this spring, but they will be at a disadvantage to students who take the exams digitally. The College Board announced Feb. 4 that tests will be offered during three time slots. The first window offers traditional in-person paper exams for all 34 subjects May 3-7, 10-12, 14 and 17. A mix of exams will be offered in person, on paper and digitally, to be taken at school or at home, from May 18-28. Then digital exams will...
After months of waiting, Hinsdale Central athletes and coaches in late January heard the words they've been waiting for: Game time! The Illinois High School Association announced the start of the winter season Jan. 27. After holding the requisite number of practices, teams faced their first opponents earlier this month. Seven Red Devil teams are competing this season. Previews of the boys and girls basketball and girls badminton teams will run in the Feb. 18 issue. Boys...
My favorite ads on TV right now are ones that feature kids of various ages expressing some level of disgust with their parents. First, there’s the Geico “Scoop, There It Is” commercial. Dan and I have friends — with no adolescent children living at home — who thought watching hip hop group Tag Team dish up ice cream and the play on their hit “Whoop, There It Is” was hilarious. They didn’t even notice the teenage daughter — or her look of disgust as she exits the room after he...
While other restaurants are welcoming diners back indoors, Vistro will remain closed, offering only take out. When the doors do reopen - possibly at the end of this month - Vistro Prime will have a new name, a new menu and a new look. "The menu will feature a lot of traditional steakhouse fare along with the Vistro classics," chef/owner Paul Virant of Hinsdale said. "We're going to continue to do the wood oven pizzas, our two burgers, the pork sandwich, the fried kale and the...
Name: Quinn Cain Year: senior Hometown: Hinsdale When did you first start playing basketball? The first time I ever played on an actual organized team was second grade. I played with two other seniors on the team, Charlie Sessa and Charlie Herbst. What has kept you playing? Obviously, I love the sport. On top of that, just the friendships you make through it. When is the last time you played? The last time I played in an actual game before the whole pandemic was the playoffs...
Teachers in Hinsdale High School District 86 have a new two-year contract that grants them an average annual increase — including benefits — of 1.89 percent a year. The school board approved the contract 7-0 at its Jan. 28 meeting. Members of the Hinsdale High School Teachers Association had ratified the agreement earlier that day. “The board of education, district administration and Hinsdale High School Teachers Association are pleased to announced that we have reached an agreement on a new teacher contract,” a joint stateme...
3 for '21. Gretchen Rubin's suggestion seemed pretty simple. "If you don't want to make a New Year's resolution, consider writing your '21 for 2021' list," the author of "The Happiness Project" wrote Dec. 15 in her blog. I liked the sound of it - a list of 21 concrete things to accomplish. (I also appreciated the photo of a typewriter that ran with the post!) She listed really helpful suggestions, too, like using the number 21 within this list (read 21 books, visit 21 diners)...
Hinsdale and other towns in Region 8 (DuPage and Kane counties) moved to Tier 1 of COVID-19 mitigations Tuesday. Eva Field, president and chief executive officer of the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce, said she was happy to see the news, even if it is just a small step forward. "My sights are on June, July, for all of our summer events," she said. "Any movement is positive movement." The move means restaurants and bars that serve food can be open at 25 percent capacity or for 25...
Butler Elementary District 53 and Gower Elementary District 62 students have spent most of the school year attending class in-person full-time, and their superintendents would like to see kids in other districts doing the same. The two made a presentation to the Illinois Association of School Boards on Thursday explaining how they have implemented on-site COVID-19 testing to keep schools open. The districts are offering rapid antigen (nasal swab) tests, rapid antibody (fingers...
As the state prepares to move into Phase 1b of vaccinations Monday, village officials are focused on making sure residents will have access to the vaccine. “The village is working with its community partner, Tammy Prentiss, from District 86 to see if there is an opportunity to use the (Hinsdale Central High) school to have a vaccination site in town to do the distribution,” village manager Kathleen Gargano reported at Tuesday’s village board meeting. She said more information about the partnership will be available in the c...
Imagining what the inauguation would look like in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic was difficult for me. Would Planet Fitness sponsor "pods" for first responders to view the events, as they did at Times Square on New Year's Eve? Would 6-foot circles be chalked on the ground, with invitees bringing their own lawn chairs to sit in them? Would everything be broadcast on Zoom or Google Teams? Having stood - wedged shoulder to shoulder - with other attendees at the first inaug...
The best advice I encountered for 2021 as 2020 came to a close was hilarious. And prophetic. "Nobody claim 2021 as 'your year,' " the Facebook post advised. "We're all going to walk in real slow. Be good. Be quiet. Don't. Touch. Anything." Unfortunately, a whole bunch of people didn't get the memo. We're still recovering from the events that took place at the nation's Capitol Jan. 6, but I for one refuse to believe this country is irreparably broken. Nor do I feel discouraged...
Although Superintendent Hector Garcia was hesitant to commit to a date for fully re-opening schools, some board members in Community Consolidated District 181 are eying March 1 as a target date. "I always hate to put down a certain date, but that would be the best-case scenario," Garcia said at Monday's board meeting As part of the path to fully reopen schools, staff members would need to be vaccinated. Gov. JB Pritzker has said teachers will be among the next group of individ...
The end of the COVID-19 pandemic is in sight, but life likely won't be back to normal for several months. And some folks might not be ready - even when restrictions are lifted - to leave the house. That doesn't mean there's nothing to do. Local organizations like the Hinsdale Public Library are offering a variety of online programs to keep people informed and entertained, especially this winter. That online programming has evolved, said Cynthia Dieden, Hinsdale's adult...
"Schadenfreude" is a term introduced to me by the very erudite musical, "Avenue Q." Its technical definition is taking pleasure ("freude") in another person's pain ("schaden"). Or, as the song lyrics go, "When I see how sad you are, it makes me sort of happy!" I've seen schadenfreude at work, and wrote the better part of a column about it a few years ago. After a bit of a scheduling snafu that caused Ainsley to miss dress rehearsal for her school's variety show, she took...
As the new year begins, The Hinsdalean traditionally reaches out to the leaders of the village’s seven nonprofit agencies, inviting them to offer a recap of the previous year and to share one wish for the new year. This is the first of two installments. A Jan. 14 article will feature Candor (formerly Robert Crown), HCS Family Services, Hinsdale Historical Society and Wellness House. Community Memorial Foundation In 2019, leaders at Community Memorial Foundation chose a theme for the organization’s upcoming 25th ann...
