Eighth St., a procedural redo to allow commissioners to register a decision, which is something they were advised should have been done after the Dec. 6 hearing on the same...

Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 has too much money in reserves, so it’s giving some back to taxpayers. That’s the simplified explanation of a decision the board made Monday night to abate $2 million in taxes in connection with its 2023 property tax levy. The abatement, which will save the owner of a $500,000 home $109 a year on taxes, will reduce the bond and interest levy from almost $5.4 million to $3.4 million. “Really the amount of the abatement was determined based on want we wanted the adjusted bond and i...

I used to think that business travel was glamorous. This was back when it was called taking a "business trip," when '80s TV shows featured beautiful, cosmopolitan people in power suits. Before I chose medicine as my career, I imagined myself striding through the airport purposefully, designer briefcase in hand. I would do impressive and important paperwork on the plane, wow clients and colleagues at my destination, eat gourmet meals and stay at fabulous hotels courtesy of a...
Which Super Bowl commercials were your favorites on Sunday? I loved Christopher Walken in BMW's "Talking Like Walken" ad, in which everyone from the valet to the guy at the drive through to his tailor offers their own impersonation of his unique voice. "There's only one Christopher Walken and one ultimate driving machine. The rest are just imitations," the announcer says, in his own Walken-esque style. The ad reminded me of one of my all-time favorite Saturday Night Live...
Fresh back from an incredible three-day whirlwind experience at Junior Theatre Festival West in Sacramento, Calif., 11-year-old Veronica Gartner had flipped the script back to school. "I had a lot of work to catch up on, but we're getting there," the Hinsdale resident said this week. The assignment backlog was a small price to pay for the delight of taking part in the musical theater-dedicated annual event Feb. 9-11. Gartner, a member of Hinsdale-based BAMtheatre, was one of...

Doug Dussman was a kind, caring, fun-loving person who loved animals and his family, those close to him said. And he had been that way since he was a small boy. "Everybody loved Doug," his younger brother, Luke, said. "He was always laughing, always telling a joke. People enjoyed being around him." Doug was never judgmental, so others found spending time with him a safe space. "If you were with Doug, you were just present with him," Luke said. Doug died in August at age 45...

Hinsdale Avenue in what appears to be a men's clothing store called The Front Page and Vann's Drugs was next door. It now is part of...
