A lot has happened since Cat Greenspon was elected to her first term as president of the Hinsdale High School District 86 Board just one year ago. Superintendent Tammy Prentiss was put on paid administrative leave. An interim superintendent resigned after working only 59 days in the district. Two board members resigned — one less than sixth months after she was elected. The assistant superintendent of human resources, the communications director and the Hinsdale South principal all resigned. The board has been the subject o...

Six years ago, I started writing for The Hinsdalean. It was the first time I had ever written anything that wasn't for a grade. It was the first time one of my stories got published. I remember my first article was about how my older sister, Anna, was going away to college - to a school called the University of Georgia. Two years later, I joined her, leaving my comfortable life in Hinsdale to study journalism at UGA. I didn't know much about journalism, only that it was a...
Ever since the most recent conflict in the Middle East began, there has been a witch hunt against Ivy League universities, their students and their presidents. Numerous attempts have been made to silence students on these campuses, especially after most of the presidents succumbed to political pressure. Instead of providing a platform for exercising freedom of speech, protesting and engaging in debate, these students have been continuously insulted, labeled, ridiculed and threatened with expulsion and loss of promised jobs. M...
Artist InJung Oh finds commonality between creative exchanges and linguistic acquisition. "I approach art as a language through which you get to learn different things and are exposed to different things," the Hinsdale resident said. Helping young people become proficient in understanding art - and, by extension, one another - led her to organize the Spirit of Life painting workshop this Saturday, May 4, at the Hinsdale Public Library (see Page 26 for details). The program...
Makes him happy, makes him feel fine! Duncan Cantiello was all in on his challenge of bursting a few bubbles at The Hinsdale Public Library Tuesday morning. Ben Jimenez, who brought his Ben's Bubble Show to the full house, practiced his art in making bubbles of all shapes and sizes. The best part? He asked the kids to come up and pop them. Even his trade secret "smoke-filled" bubbles brought their own special pop and smoke to the event. Please turn to Page 36 for more...

Drive down some streets in Robbins Park and only a closer look reveals homes have been torn down and rebuilt. On other blocks, new homes outnumber original ones. Some new construction blends in with the historic neighborhood. Other houses, due to size or design, clearly look out of place. This is true of many residential neighborhoods in Hinsdale, but Robbins Park has been a National Register Historic District since 2008. At that time, 65 percent of its 475 homes were deemed...

The best Mother's Day gift we ever gave my mom was a Belgian waffle maker. I feel certain she's the one who gave us the suggestion. However, it was really my sister Laura and I who loved it. I was in middle school that year. When summer arrived, my sister and I spent all our time swimming. My mom would be at work when we came home from morning practice. As a result, the two of us were left in charge of making our own breakfast. We always came home starving with the kind of...

I'll never forget a phone call I got one December when I was a kid. It was an elf calling from the North Pole! My own personal elf, he told me. I asked his name and was surprised when he said "Wee Wee." "Wee Wee?" I asked, wondering if he had a bed-wetting problem. He explained that was his name because he was a wee little elf. He told me a bit about Santa's preparations for the big day and after a short talk, hung up. I was too little to know that Santa's real elves don't...

Is a school district able to limit the number of Freedom of Information Act requests it processes? Hinsdale High School District 86 Board member Jeff Waters posed that question at the April 25 board meeting as he expressed concern at the financial and human resources needed to maintain access to information the public is legally entitled to under the Freedom of Information Act. “What do districts do, if anything, to combat excessive FOIA requests, both from the press and community members?” Waters asked administrators. As at...
