The scoops on Sunday did not keep the doctors, nurses, administrators and village residents away from Burlington Park. The Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Junior Board hosted the 69th annual ice cream social, which hasn't seen scooped ice cream since 2020 when the board pivoted and passed out ice cream bars to maintain social distancing. That practice went on for three years. Charley Prendergast and Ellie and Lucy Rozum take a break in the shade to enjoy their ice cream. Please...

Connor Pauley capped off the first drive with a 20-yard touchdown run — his first of two on the day. Sherwood also scored two touchdowns, running one in and catching one from Luke Schroeder. Carter Contreras Hinsdale What are you feeling as the football season begins? Obviously I'm super excited. The most important thing for me as a senior and team captain is leading my team. How do you try and lead as captain? I think it's important to teach the younger guys and the guys who haven't played in big games how to keep yourself calm and controlled in tense situations. I looked up to my team captains, and they definitely helped me push through the challenges and that...
For the first installment in our preview series of Hinsdale Central's fall sports squads, we look at the boys and girls cross country squads and the football teams. Both running programs are relying on younger team members to pick up the pace to continue their state-level success. The Red Devil gridiron gang, meanwhile, eyes a return to the playoffs after missing out last season. The series will continue in the Sept. 7 and 14 issues. Here's what each of the head coaches had...
Vincent and Kelsey arrived as very timid kittens and have since blossomed into beautiful young adults. They are still a little shy around strangers, but they are sweet and cuddly with people they know, and Kelsey especially loves to be held. They are 8 months old, microchipped and fully vaccinated. Their adoption fee is $200, and they must go home together. The Hinsdale Humane Society Tuthill Family Pet Rescue & Resource Center is open to the public 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, noon...
As kids, we learn to associate fall with changes. We change our routine, meet new classmates and learn new things about the world. That tradition doesn't need to end when we graduate (or, for those of us still in school, after that last bell rings). This year, your library is embracing the spirit of change that autumn brings with new opportunities to meet your neighbors and new twists on classic offerings. Everyone should set aside time this fall to make new friends before...

What's important to know about senior living? "Most of us don't want to admit that we need help," said Mary Ferguson, community outreach director for The Birches assisted living and memory care in Clarendon Hills. And the subject of moving into senior living can be a fraught one for adult children to broach with their parents. But better to address it earlier than too late, Ferguson advised. "You do not want to start looking at senior living when you have a crisis," she said....
CENTRAL GRAD IN TIMES SQUARE Jeremiah Adams, a Hinsdale Central graduate, will appear in the bright lights of Broadway on Saturday, Sept. 9, as part of the annual National Down Syndrome Society Times Square Video presentation. The one-hour video of roughly 500 photographs includes children, teens and adults with Down syndrome from all 50 states. These collective images promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in a very visible way. The photo of Jeremiah was selected from more than 2,400...
An adult pinewood derby fundraiser was held Aug. 19 in front of Fuller House in downtown Hinsdale. A small group gathered to watch and cheer on their designated cars. Jackson, Lucy and Michael Hibner were quick to root on any car in any race. Proceeds benefited the Boy Scouts of American Pathway to Adventure Council. (Jim Slonoff photos)...
You'd be hard pressed to find Buncombe, Illinois, on a map. Buncombe is a five-hour drive straight south from Hinsdale as the crow flies, as my dad would say. I dreaded visiting Buncombe as a kid. In the early 1970s there was nothing there. Miles and miles of farmland interrupted by old farmhouses and grain silos. Maybe an occasional Stuckey's along the way. My paternal grandfather grew up near Buncombe before he made his way to Chicago in 1920. However, a few distant...

Were it not for my summer sabbatical from column writing, each one of these probably would have been its own column. Instead, I offer an abbreviated look at summer 2023. Since June, I ... • saw my birth mom and birth dad reunite for the first time in more than 50 years when they traveled here for Ainsley’s eighth-grade graduation. Not long after I connected with them in 2020, someone asked me if I ever thought they would meet. “I hope not!” I replied, thinking it would b...
As students get acclimated to their class schedules, locker combinations and homework, adults also have some adjusting to do now that school is back in session. Traffic patterns have changed dramatically since the first day at Hinsdale Central Aug. 21 and District 181 schools Aug. 22. More students are heading to and from school on foot or on their bikes — or getting a ride from mom or dad or even a classmate. They might not be paying as much attention as they should be, so drivers need to be extra vigilant. To that end, w...
Jennifer Cave could barely hear the voice on the other end of the line when she got the call that she had been named the 2023 Volunteer of the Year at The Community House. "When they called it was over the summer and I literally was at Disney World," she said. "It was so loud in the background." The Magic Kingdom was the perfect place to learn she had received the Katharine Van Duysen Sylvester Service Award for her work to "empower and support adolescents as they navigate...

Almost a century ago, Hinsdale residents came together and raised almost $150,000 in a single week to pay for a new building to honor those who fought in the first World War. Village leaders hope residents will do the same this year to fund improvements to the Memorial Building in honor of the village's 150th anniversary. "They had a committee 100 years ago for how to create a memorial and they wanted it to be something lasting and something that would serve the community...

The patio outside The Community House was a cloud of pink Saturday night, as friends and family gathered to celebrate Hinsdale teenager Savannah Wood and her victory over osteosarcoma. Clad in all shades of Savannah's signature color, the crowd feasted on 13-year-old Savannah's favorite food and danced to her favorite music, all under a canopy of pink lights. Party planner Susan Cordogan, a Hinsdale resident and owner of Big City Events, decided the day before the event that...
