    Gerda W. Hoover, 92, of Lombard, died Aug. 8, 2019, at her home. Gerda was born in 1927 to Erich and Maria Wolff, landowners in East Prussia, Provice of Germany. An only child, Gerda grew up at a peaceful time in a beautiful farming area she described as a land of dark forests and crystal-like lakes, home to elk and the famous Trakehner pure breed horses. At the end of World War II in the winter of 1945, she and her mother fled from advancing Russian troops. Her father had been called to dig ditches to stop the Soviet tanks....

    George Hogrewe, 95, a longtime Hinsdale resident, died Sept. 1, 2019, in Naperville. George was born in 1923 at his family’s home on Clay Street in Hinsdale. He was a radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific campaign. He reminisced about being in Tokyo Bay at the time of the Japanese surrender and about sailing in the rough waters of the Bering Sea on the light cruiser the USS Detroit.     1U GOLD BEATS OSWEGO The 10U Gold Falcons played a fantastic game against Oswego, winning 24-6. The team started out quickly going up 8-0 on the first series after an amazing 50-yard touchdown run on fourth and 12 by Charles Calhoun and two-point pass conversion by Brian O’Malley.
