Charles Janda, 93, of Hinsdale, husband, father, and respected surgeon passed away at home Sept. 27, 2019. He was an accomplished man who dedicated much of his life to the practice of medicine, but most important to him was his commitment to family and his remarkable marriage to Lorraine, his wife of 63 years. Dr. Janda proudly served his country in the South Pacific, Japan and Korea. He trained at Loyola, Northwestern and Washington universities, working as a dentist to support his family while attending medical school. He...

  • Women need to shift focus of caring to self

    Mary Lou Mastro|Updated Oct 3, 2019

When does it start? When do women reach the point at which they begin to neglect their own physical and mental health to care for others? Frankly, most women eventually do this. Other people's needs tend to take priority over our own well-being - first for work, then for a spouse and kids, maybe even parents and grandparents. It's instinctual. What do you enjoy most about the sport? I really like the team aspect of cross country, ho we all kind of rely on each other. What is most difficult? It's a long season, so probably keeping our focus and being ready to race every weekend. How many days a week do your train? Five. Every day it's a different...

October is the perfect time of year to soak up the suburb's natural surroundings without summer-level concerns about sunburn (still use sunscreen!) or insect bites (still pack the bug spray!). The forest preserve districts in DuPage and Cook counties offer a harvest of activities to help residents get out of doors before Old Man Winter compels us to seek indoor amusements. Many programs are free but may require...
