Who's on First? - Hinsdale's Sean Chaudhry came across a box of old photos tucked in a corner of his store's basement. Public works crews were busy widening the sidewalk in these photos taken from the east side of Garfield Avenue looking down First Street in 1937. Showing at the Hinsdale Theatre was William Powell and Myrna Loy starring in "After The Thin Man." Do you have a Hinsdale photo that is at least 25 years old? We'd love to share it with our readers. • The great Hinsdalean bakeoff

    Amy McCauley|Updated Oct 4, 2023

I love a good cooking challenge. So, I had no reservations when I agreed to write a 150th village anniversary column featuring a historic Hinsdale recipe. That was until I found myself in the basement of Immanuel Hall - in the archives of the historical society - talking about hospital food. As it turns out, the oldest known cookbook in Hinsdale is a collection of vegetarian recipes from Hinsdale Hospital called "The Sanitarium Cook Book." The book dates back to 1921 and was...

Chicago Ave. The event, put on by the village's parks and recreation department, was moved to the park from its previous Hinsdale Middle School site. Mike Hayes,...

  • Ask an expert - Club Central

    Sandy Illian Bosch|Updated Oct 4, 2023

When Jarrar Salam transferred to Hinsdale Central High School from a boarding school in Connecticut, he had never attended a public school before. Compared to his school of 200-some students, his Central seemed huge and overwhelming, Salam said. It was the Ambassadors Club that helped him navigate his new surroundings and to become comfortable as a member of the Red Devil community. Club sponsor Donna Wheeler said about 50 to 60 ambassadors help 60 to 80 new students...

Damar Hamlin and Bronny James are lucky. They were in the right place at the right time when they suffered their sudden cardiac events. Many are not so lucky, like our family friend Michael Brindley. Michael attended Hinsdale Central. He was known for his big heart and big hugs. Michael loved all sports. He dreamt of becoming a sports journalist. Sadly, Michael's dream was never realized because he passed away in 2016 from sudden cardiac arrest at age 16. October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness month. SCA is the No. 1...

  • Letter - Discussion, not dysfunction, is accurate for the D86 board

    Updated Oct 4, 2023

Last week, The Hinsdalean misquoted D86’s board president advancing a narrative of a “dysfunctional” board. During the discussion of legal representation, President Greenspon welcomed discussion: “I can ask for discussion so that everybody can provide feedback;” and contrary to the report, Dr. Yonke did not push back. Drs. Yonke and Lechner both support a legal representation review (Levinthal and Greenspon did, as well). The split 2:5 vote responded to “possible action to withdraw prior approval of minutes.” Levinthal and...

  • Finally in the thick of school

    Leah Packer|Updated Oct 4, 2023

I have always hated getting shots, COVID, flu - and I am sure I hated getting the chickenpox vaccine when I was young, too. Flu season would come around, and I would push off getting the shot until the leaves on the trees had curled and crisped and crumpled on the ground and the air had a hint of winter breeze. When I was younger it was the pain that scared me, but also the second of anticipation right before the jab. I like to think I am a lot less scared now, but that...

You haven't been attending countless cocktail parties and dinners to celebrate this momentous week? Well, I will forgive you. • Golfview Hills stays independent course

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 4, 2023

Just beyond the southwestern boundary of Hinsdale is a residential area that doesn't belong to any particular town but has strong community spirit nonetheless. Golfview Hills, so named for overlooking adjacent Ruth Lake Country Club, is a collection of about 300 homes that was established in the mid-1950s between Madison Street and Route 83. Assimilating into Hinsdale would have seemed a natural step at some point in the intervening decades, right? Not for Golfview Hills homeo...
