Autumn begins its fall - Lana-Marie Heitmann set her sight on cleaning up the front yard last Thursday; however, raking leaves on a windy day made the chore more of a challenge. But as each gust of wind brought more chaos to her efforts, it also brought a smile to her face and a determination to conquer the colorful signs of the season. (Jim Slonoff photo)...
Hinsdale firefighters responded to a 9-1-1 call of a house fire on the 300 block of East Walnut Street Friday afternoon. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire in the fireplace and smoke filling the house. The fire did not spread beyond the fireplace. Deputy Chief Jon Carlson determined the weather cap at the top of the chimney was not in place, which caused the smoke to fill the home. After repositioning the cap, the house was ventilated. In the spring of 2020, the Hinsdale Chorale was preparing not only for a seasonal concert but for its 20th anniversary celebration. Both were nixed by the pandemic, at least temporarily. Now the vocal troupe is readying to return to the stage to make up for lost time. The chorale will perform the program "From Silence to Gloria" Thanksgiving weekend at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in La Grange. Kristi Freitager, a chorale board member and longtime alto for the group, said the...

What makes a great Thanksgiving dessert? Fancy, elaborate desserts certainly have their place at the holiday table. But they aren't what comes to mind when pastry chef Toni Marie Cox thinks of Thanksgiving. "It's a fall holiday, so in my mind, it's rustic things," said Cox, owner of Toni Patisserie & Café in Hinsdale. "It's why pies are so appropriate. It's also about the fall harvest." Apples are quite popular in pies, but Cox is also using them this year in a French apple...

Outside of work, and most importantly to him, David was a loving and devoted father and husband. He loved spending his time with his family and...

Joan was born in 1930 in London, England, to Henry Jones and Lilian Johnson. She never knew her parents as they both died when she was very young, something she often lamented in her later years. She became very attached to her grandmother Mary ("Gran"), who was an absolute rock to both Joan and her sister, Binnie, caring for them as youngsters and...

I applaud The Hinsdalean’s admonishment (Oct. 21 editorial) of the new District 86 board members’ apparent disdain for the administration’s expert judgment on curriculum and grading matters. Innovation is needed more than ever in these rapidly changing technological times. My 50 years in complex litigation and working with employers, licensing and credentialing organizations in the health care professions and schools on assessment and testing issues, as well as teaching in law and business school, have convinced me that...
Today, I thought I'd tap into my intellectual grandiosity to present a philosophical theory. A question of id vs. ego, thought vs soul, good vs evil. Or maybe, if I could entice you to go deeper into the discussion: Phoebe vs Joey. In an episode of the TV series, "Friends," Joey states that true altruism doesn't exist, because in doing something nice for another person, the benefactor himself gets positive feedback or psychological warm fuzzies for doing so. Any act of...
As I think about our blessings this year, I count our District 181 teachers, secretaries, janitors, crossing guards, paraprofessionals and principals high on my list. We are so fortunate to live in this community where our kids have the absolute best education opportunities because of our caring, smart and driven educators. Thank you for prioritizing our kids this year more than ever. We are forever grateful to each of you. — Amber Nolan, Hinsdale...
The jury is still out - literally - on the fate of Kyle Rittenhouse as we go to press Wednesday afternoon. I've been angry with Rittenhouse since I first saw the videos of him roaming the streets of Kenosha with his AR-15 rifle after he killed two men and injured a third. He became, for me, a sort of symbol of all the terrible things that had been happening the summer of 2020. Lives were being destroyed by police and protesters and a worldwide pandemic. As I watched the clips...
Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Anyone who’s looking to lean into that life should circle Nov. 30 on the calendar. Giving Tuesday is the “world’s biggest day of generosity” according to https://www.givingtuesday.org. Of course, it comes on the heels of the traditional shop-o-rama occasion Black Friday and the digital age’s Cyber Monday. Amidst the delight of acquisitions, let us also experience the joy of altruism through acts that reach beyond...
Building strength is Craig Kruse's stock in trade. The physical therapist has served several years as a Hinsdale Central football coach and a trainer for the school's student-athletes, helping them optimize their physical performance. "It's fun to take kids full circle - to help them get bigger and stronger and faster in the weight room, help them become a better football player on the field, and if they get hurt, I'm able to help them get back (to playing) by treating them,"...

By Ken Knutson and Sandy Illian Bosch If residents are hungry for some French toast, interested in trying a new hairstyle, intrigued by new lighting in the living room or fancy redecorating in the family room, they need not travel outside of the village. Early churches - Sandy Williams' book, "Images of America - Hinsdale," highlights the early churches built in Hinsdale. In 1918, the congregation, together with some Unitarians, joined with the Congregationalists in forming Union Church. This building then served as the Episcopal Guild Hall and Sunday School."...
