Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools will remain open, despite a recommendation from administrators that the schools close for a two-week “adaptive pause.” Hinsdale Central Principal Bill Walsh told board members Nov. 19 that the last two weeks under the hybrid learning model have been “extremely stressful” as the number of positive COVID-19 cases has increased and large numbers of students are going remote. “They are struggling mentally, they are struggling emotionally,” he said. “Students want to be with their...
By Pamela Lannom [email protected] The Hinsdalean’s annual gift ideas series always begins with a shopping trip around town between yours truly and a willing volunteer. I’ve been shopping with my co-workers, leaders of Hinsdale’s nonprofit agencies and members of the village’s economic development commission. This year, however, with COVID-19 infection rates climbing, spending an hour or two visiting a dozen stores with a different person each week didn’t seem to be th...

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Football, turkey, pumpkin pie and Macy's parade. For many Americans, that constitutes the Thanksgiving celebration. "Thanksgiving certainly is secular in the sense that everybody has this opportunity to look around their own lives and see what they have to be thankful for," said Pastor Jay Klein of Zion Lutheran Church in Hinsdale. "Yo...
With politics dominating the headlines, I am consciously - but maybe not subconsciously - steering well clear of any partisan chatter. You'll get your share of that during Thanksgiving with the crazy relative who's convinced there is still a path to victory in a race already declared lost. Instead, this commentary is on a fall decluttering project. Recently, I elected to make a change and began a task of discarding things that I desperately wanted gone from the House. Back in...
Last Monday I was supposed to start the week with a 90-minute gratitude walk at Mayslake Forest Preserve. Instead, I was home in quarantine while my COVID-19 positive husband was upstairs in isolation. I know that the best antidote to focusing too much on my troubles is to think about the things for which I am grateful. And so - without the benefit of the gratitude walk - I embarked on a list. Despite all the reasons I had to complain, I found plenty to be grateful for. • B...

To Kristen Laakso, rooms are filled with much more than furniture and buildings are made of more than wood and steel. For this lifelong student of art and architecture, rooms are full of questions and buildings tell a story. As president of the Hinsdale Historical Society, Laakso hopes to share the stories and answer the questions hidden within the village's oldest and most interesting buildings. "This town has a story to tell," said Laakso, who moved to Hinsdale in 2012 with...

Leaves also may be kept on the property to be composted for use as mul...
Cars wrapped around the corner of Maple and Washington streets early Saturday morning, then further back on Hinsdale Avenue all the way to Garfield Avenue, queued up to receive a Thanksgiving dinner kit from HCS Family Services. So many cars so early that Amy Wickstrom, executive director of HCS, moved up the distribution start time for traffic safety. "We were almost around the whole block. I was like, 'We've got to go!' " she said. The lengthening line illustrated how the...

How can young people champion social justice? Youth is no obstacle to activism, as demonstrated by Aminah Ahmed. The Hinsdale Central junior and first-generation Indian-American was inspired to advocate for justice by reports of women-led peaceful protests in India that began last December in response to the government's passage of the Citizenship Act. The act provided a pathway to citizenship for illegal migrants, but specifically excluded those of Muslim faith. The months...
Jack of all trades - According to Sandy Williams' in her book, "Images of America - Hinsdale," Anson Ayers had a wide-ranging background of teaching, farming, carriage building, hardware, harness making and operating a sawmill. She goes on to say, "He bought 80 acres and this home on the northwest side and perhaps did some gentleman farming before subdividing the property, his initial goal."...
