After watching the margin between herself and fellow District 86 school board candidate Andrew Catton widen, Asma Akhras declared victory late Friday, three days after the election. “I can tell I’m still absorbing it,” she told The Hinsdalean Tuesday. “There’s a celebratory aspect. There’s a relief aspect — it was a tough campaign. There is an excitement aspect.” Unofficial election results on April 5, the day after the election, showed Akhras in the lead by 195 votes over...
In the decades we’ve been covering elections, we’ve rarely seen an election like this one. The worst had been the race for village president in 2009, when someone sent out a juvenile email about then candidate Tom Cauley. The stunt obviously didn’t do Cauley any harm, as he won that election — and three more since then. In 2023, smear campaigns seem to find their home on Facebook more than email inboxes, where people are free to say whatever they want about the candidates and the volunteers who are supporting them. We’ve c...

Kay Gallo and Cat Greenspon appear to have won two of the three open seats on the Hinsdale High School District 86 Board. Gallo received 6,702 and Greenspon 6,615, according to unofficial totals in DuPage and Cook counties Wednesday. "I am surprised, Gallo said. "It's so hard to know how it goes. I wasn't going anywhere yesterday. I just stayed home because I've been with a group where people didn't make it and that's really sad." Less than 200 votes separated Asma Akhras and...
Hinsdale Central High School senior Meghna Mitra will serve as liaison to the Hinsdale District 86 school board for just a few more months, but it's a job that she said will follow her into college and beyond. "I'm interested in studying public policy and politics on the pre-law track," she said. One day, she hopes to use all that she's learned to affect health and environmental policy. As the liaison between the Hinsdale Central Student Council and the school board, Mitra...

The new aligned social studies curriculum that will be rolled out over the next few years in Hinsdale High School District 86 is aimed at helping students “see themselves” in the content, educators submit. But some district board members questioned the wisdom of doing away with popular courses like AP European History in pursuit of creating “global citizens.” At the March 23 meeting, members of the District 86 Social Studies Alignment team laid out the plan to, as detailed in the presentation, “create a single program o...
