How do you top winning state, breaking a relay record and having your high school swim team named No. 1 in the country? By placing sixth in the world in the 200-yard breaststroke. Hinsdale Central junior Josh Bey, a member of Highland Hurricanes Swim Club in Indiana, swam the event in 2:14.56 at the World Junior Swimming Championships last month in Netanya, Israel. Despite making the finals, Bey was not satisfied with his results. "My swim definitely wasn't what I was looking...

Hinsdale Central senior Alex Rasmussen opted to eschew his driver in the cool, windy conditions at the IHSA boys golf state final tournament Friday and Saturday in Bloomington. The Central marching band...

Club sponsor Donna Wheeler said about 50 to 60 ambassadors help 60 to 80 new students...

Damar Hamlin and Bronny James are lucky. They were in the right place at the right time when they suffered their sudden cardiac events. Many are not so lucky, like our family friend Michael Brindley. Michael attended Hinsdale Central. He was known for his big heart and big hugs. Michael loved all sports. He dreamt of becoming a sports journalist. Sadly, Michael's dream was never realized because he passed away in 2016 from sudden cardiac arrest at age 16. October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness month. SCA is the No. 1...
I have always hated getting shots, COVID, flu - and I am sure I hated getting the chickenpox vaccine when I was young, too. Flu season would come around, and I would push off getting the shot until the leaves on the trees had curled and crisped and crumpled on the ground and the air had a hint of winter breeze. When I was younger it was the pain that scared me, but also the second of anticipation right before the jab. I like to think I am a lot less scared now, but that...
Hinsdale's Haven Marginean finds fulfillment in theater work whether on stage or backstage. "As an actor you're more in charge of your character, and as a director you're more in charge of the story," said the Hinsdale Central junior. Marginean's stage of choice is the Theatre of Western Springs, where she is currently serving as assistant director of the production of "Witch," with final performances this weekend (see Page 26 for details). Her memory suggests she's been part...

Throughout the week, several of Central's sports teams competed in homecoming matches....
The Hinsdale High School District 86 Board is expected to approve a fiscal year 2023-24 budget Monday with anticipated revenues of almost $133 million and projected expenses of $142 million. Local revenues are expected to increase $4.3 million or 3.6 percent due to increases in the consumer price index and new construction that applied to the 2022 levy, the district’s annual request for property tax r...
John Naisbitt didn't learn that his name was among the coaches and contributors on the 100 Years of the West Suburban Conference Honor Roll until someone told him to look online. "I was surprised," Naisbitt said of his inclusion. "It's extremely humbling to be counted among the best coaches of all time. I stand on the shoulders of people like (fellow honoree and Central tennis coach predecessor) Jay Kramer." Ultimately, he stressed, it's about the players. "It's fantastic...

Like many who grew up surrounded by books, Angelique Burrell dreamed of writing her own one day. "I wanted to, but it seemed so far out of reach of anything," she said. "It took a while for me to understand I could be writing right now. I don't have to wait for some other time to start doing it." She was on a three-day summer road trip years ago - with her husband, two kids and new puppy - to her vacation home in Lake Tahoe, Calif., when she got an idea for a story that...
