  • Details of D86 reopening plan announced

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Sep 30, 2020

While most Hinsdale Central students will be back on campus for one day during the week of Oct. 5, the final group of in-person learners won’t return until Nov. 2 according to the Hinsdale High School District 86 reopening plan. The plan, released at the Sept. 24 school board meeting, calls for 25 percent of students to be on campus at a time. Each of the four equal groups — which will be assigned by an algorithm and will have siblings grouped together — will attend a single half day the first week of October. Then each...

  • McCabe keeps Red Devils on course

    Ken Knutson|Updated Sep 30, 2020

In 1998, Hinsdale Central's girls cross country program was looking for an assistant coach. Mark McCabe had a track record helping the boys the previous six years and had coached some of the girls distance runners during track season. But would that experience translate? "I never really pictured myself as a full-time girls coach," McCabe admitted. Despite that, he took the position and quickly found his stride. "I loved it," he said. "(Girls) are like sponges in terms of...

  • Fundraiser to prevent sudden cardiac deaths

    Updated Sep 30, 2020

As junior board members of the just1mike Foundation, we wanted to inform residents about our Facebook fundraiser in October. Just1mike was created to honor Michael Brindley, a Hinsdale Central student, who suffered sudden cardiac death in 2016, playing basketball at just 16 years old. The mission of just1mike is to raise awareness and survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest in teens and young adults through training, screening and education. Many are unaware sudden cardiac arrest is the No. 1 killer of student athletes. It...

  • Your old road is rapidly aging

    Bret Conway|Updated Sep 30, 2020

Bob Dylan once sang about prior generations turning a cynical eye to youth activism. Fifty-six years later, when recent Hinsdale Central grad Maiwen Amegadjie organized June's peaceful protest against racial oppression, some Hinsdale business owners criticized young protesters claiming the timing was not right and that "nothing good will come out of it." A quote from Maiwen touched upon that criticism: "... I feel like a lot of people are sheltered and cloistered here. They...

  • Audience comment has no place at end of agenda

    Updated Sep 30, 2020

We get it, Kevin. We agree it’s inconsiderate — bordering on rude — for citizens to come to Hinsdale High School District 86 Board meetings, complain about something during public comment and leave. And we know, board President Camden, that you have the authority to set the agenda. But moving “audience communication” to the very end of school board meetings (item 21.1 on Sept. 24) is a disproportionate response to this discourteous behavior. At best, it reads like punishment for a misbehaving child. At worst it could be...

  • Red Devil athletes are back in action

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Sep 23, 2020

Sports are back! That's the good news for Red Devil Nation. But the fall season, during which only six teams are competing, is presenting some unique challenges for everyone from athletes to the athletic director. Dealing with ongoing changes to the fall schedule has been nerve-wracking, Hinsdale Central AD Dan Jones said this week. "In a normal year, we do our schedules well ahead of time, almost a year ahead of time, and finalize them months ahead of time so we're ready to...

  • Get to know our new contributing columnists

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Sep 16, 2020

When we announced this summer that we were looking for new contributing columnists, we didn't expect to have the largest applicant pool we've seen in years. (Perhaps being stuck at home with nothing to do made people more likely to apply!) While I was happy to receive emails from so many people, it made the job of selecting new writers very difficult. We announced our three new columnists - Bret Conway, Gabriela Garcia and Alegra Waverley - and our retuning writer, Kelly...

  • Kid favorites have adult appeal

    Susan OByrne|Updated Sep 2, 2020

You see them everywhere these days. Their names are Max, Tillie, Sadie, Dixie, Leo, Rocky, Pepper. They are joyful, bounding around on lawns, their entire little bodies vibrating with the sheer excitement of being alive. Puppies! Everywhere! They are one of the silver linings of 2020's insane dystopian hell-scape. I'm counting my blessings these days. And puppies are an Absolute Good. There are a few other non-awful things this year. Biking, for one. Biking is THE sport of...

Hinsdale High School District 86 officials are reviewing information released last week by the DuPage County Health Department to determine possible next steps in an effort to eventually implement the district’s hybrid model for instruction. The district announced Aug. 13 that it would start the school year with remote learning exclusively in the wake of newly issued guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Board of Education. The new guidelines tightened protocols in the event of a p...

  • Summer - finally - means softball

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 26, 2020

Eccles Field in Prospect Park isn't where Hinsdale Central senior Lainey Harvey expected to be playing softball this summer. And she wasn't even really playing - she was running drills with the girls signed up for the Lady Red Devils Softball Training Academy. But it's the closest she's come to her sport for the past six months. "This summer my season was canceled, so the last time I played a game would have been in February," said Harvey, who plays first base and outfield...

The rank of Eagle Scout is well-known both inside and beyond the Boy Scouting World. But few are aware of Scouting's Hornaday Badge Award. Members of Hinsdale Boy Scout Troop 8 are certainly familiar with Hornaday after two members, Hinsdale residents Aldas Kriauciunas and Sacheen Upadhye, achieved the rare honor this summer by dedicating significant time and effort into what they hope are lasting contributions in the area of conservation. Fewer than a 100 Scouts nationwide...

  • Pleasing any of the people tough during pandemic

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 12, 2020

I asked Ken yesterday what happened at the Hinsdale Village Board the previous night. "They're going with a hybrid model," he replied dryly. "Tom, Laurel and Jerry will attend the first meeting of the month. Scott, Neale, Matt and Luke will attend the second meeting." He jests, of course, but the "hybrid model" is on our minds. We've spent a lot of time learning and writing about hybrid plans for Hinsdale students to return to school. First I "attended" (i.e. watched online)...

The world's greatest inventions are born of necessity. For Hinsdale Central High School alum Sophia Karbowski, that need was for a quick and healthy snack. Karbowski was studying entrepreneurial management at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth when she became frustrated with the lack of dining options on campus. Coupling her entrepreneurial spirit with her need for nutrition, Rollin' n Bowlin' was born. Acai bowls - frozen puree made from acai berries topped with granola...
