  • New series looks at 13 taxing districts

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Sep 12, 2024

It's a common refrain in Hinsdale. "We pay high taxes to live here." And residents do - in part because their homes are worth a lot of money. But when they make that statement to Village President Tom Cauley, he has some additional information he shares with them. "People assume that their property taxes go mostly to the village, and I tell them it's only 7 percent, and people are usually surprised by that," he said. The village's portion of the tax bill - including the...

  • Elementary school offers inspiration

    Leah Packer|Updated Apr 17, 2024

It was the day that I had been waiting for. My fourth-grade teacher passed around the large packets filled with lists of activities and choices for the upcoming special day. I scanned through the options, circling the words that jumped out to me the most on the page. Baking. Forensic science. Firefighting. I ranked my top activities and submitted them to my teacher. The purpose of these thick, white packets was for High Interest Day, an event in elementary school where...

"I found my old pillow and blanket," said the 33-year veteran of the force, who retired as chief on Friday. "I cooked dinner and stayed the night. Went on my last call. I made (the crew) breakfast. It brought back memories of how I started." It was a poignant conclusion to a career spent in the fire service. "It's all I've done since I was 18 years old," remarked Giannelli, who...

  • Editors demonstrate frightening sense of humor

    Updated Oct 25, 2023

Perhaps one of the most frightening things to happen the week before Halloween is our annual enumeration of scary scenarios that we have imagined afflicting our fair village. As always, we offer the following words of caution to readers: Beware the sarcasm. • The village takes a closer look at the old, weathered copy of its articles of incorporation and discovers it is actually dated April 4, 1874, requiring officials to coordinate yet another year of sesquicentennial celebrations. • The Hinsdale High School District 86 Boa...

  • Friends, neighbors make sure we never forget

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Sep 13, 2023

People commemorate 9/11 in their own way. My husband and I always make sure our American flag is on display near our front door. Monday morning we watched news coverage of family members reading the names of those lost in the attacks, including their loved ones. One of the readers was a young boy there to honor the grandfather he never had the chance to meet. Hinsdalean Dave Pequet sent out the annual "Remembering Sept. 11" email from his company, MPI Wealth Management. "The...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 23, 2023

Eight years ago this month, lightning struck twice in Hinsdale on the same day, causing one house to catch fire and destroying the chimney of another. These excerpts are from the article that ran Aug. 6, 2015. Shortly before midnight, lightning struck the home at 561 Walker St., causing $75,000 in damage. "The guys did a great job," Chief Rick Ronovsky said of the firefighters who responded. "They got there and there was fire coming out of the roof of the house." They located...

  • Retro badges honor village anniversary

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 19, 2023

Did you know Hinsdale police and firefighter/paramedics are wearing retro badges this year in honor of the village's 150th anniversary? At the fire department, which is also celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, the project required quite a bit of research. "There have been badge numbers physically on the badges, but they were just kind of handed out arbitrarily," firefighter/paramedic Nick McDonough said. So when he and Chief John Giannelli were talking about how to ma...

  • Once upon a time

    Updated Apr 19, 2023

Calling all cars - Hinsdale police and firefighters are honoring the village's 150th anniversary - and their forebears - by wearing throwback badges this year. When Hinsdale was founded in 1873, among the village officers was a "police magistrate." The village hired its first true policeman, C.P. Clark in 1877; his official title was constable. Star No. 1 was given in January 1888 to John Peter Linn, a native of Denmark who had come to Hinsdale five years earlier. This photo...
