Even without a state final, the Hinsdale Central girls swim team made sure it left its high water mark on the 2020 season, posting a slew of new school records en route to a commanding sectional championship. The host Red Devils treated the IHSA sectional Oct. 24 as if it were the state meet, said head coach Bob Barber. The result was a winning 246-point tally, 66 points clear of runner-up Downers Grove North. "We had quite a showing at conference (on Oct. 17) and tried to...
The blustery winds at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park Tuesday didn't throw the Hinsdale Central girl golfers off their game. The Red Devils kept their composure to win their 2A IHSA sectional championship with 312 strokes, three strokes better than runner-up Sandburg. "It was really close," head coach Nick Latorre said of the suspense as both teams battled to the end for the victory. "They have great attitudes and competed and did a great job all year." The tournament...

In 1998, Hinsdale Central's girls cross country program was looking for an assistant coach. Mark McCabe had a track record helping the boys the previous six years and had coached some of the girls distance runners during track season. But would that experience translate? "I never really pictured myself as a full-time girls coach," McCabe admitted. Despite that, he took the position and quickly found his stride. "I loved it," he said. "(Girls) are like sponges in terms of...
All in — Almost two dozen members of Hinsdale Central’s football team, along with dozens of other volunteers, helped out at the annual St. Isaac Jogues Seeds of Service project Saturday. Eccles Field in Prospect Park isn't where Hinsdale Central senior Lainey Harvey expected to be playing softball this summer. And she wasn't even really playing - she was running drills with the girls signed up for the Lady Red Devils Softball Training Academy. But it's the closest she's come to her sport for the past six months. "This summer my season was canceled, so the last time I played a game would have been in February," said Harvey, who plays first base and outfield...
More than 30 student-athletes who graduated from Hinsdale Central High School in May will pursue their sports in college. Today we present the final installment of athlete profiles that did not run during the spring season, which was canceled due to COVID-19. Name: Chloe Lapointe Year: senior Hometown: Burr Ridge What was it like not having a senior water polo season? I actually tore my labrum before the Red-White meet. That was my first and last game. It was going to be my last game anyway because of my shoulder, but not being able to play because of coronavirus and my shoulder (was...
The short-circuited spring high school sports calendar sadly meant no final campaigns for many senior Central student-athletes. Consequently, The Hinsdalean did not run our normal series of seasonal athlete profiles - until now. Over these last several weeks we've been serving up delayed recognition for (now former) Red Devils who, according to coaches, brought their best to their respective programs, whether in the heat of competition or in fostering team unity. Today's...
Athlete profiles typically are part of our sports pages throughout the school year, with a different team member recommended each week by his or her coach. With the spring season canceled due to COVID-19, The Hinsdalean altered its sports coverage, eliminating the round-up page on which the profiles ran. We are happy to highlight these athletes now in a four-part series that began June 11. Today's athletes competed on the track, boys water polo and girls lacrosse teams. Name:...

At the close of tonight's Hinsdale Central virtual graduation ceremony, members of the class of 2020 will move their tassels across their caps to symbolize their transition. Although that final act will be done at individual homes due to COVID-19, it will pay homage to a four-year journey engaged in collectively, suggested seniors Lauren Hughes and Nick Moawad. "I don't want to be remembered as the class that didn't get a prom or graduation because of corona," Hughes said....
Prom. Graduation. State titles. All have been in jeopardy since Hinsdale Central was closed March 13. But the news that all have been canceled is official — and it’s difficult to hear. “I was holding out hope,” Hinsdale Central varsity boys tennis coach John Naisbitt said. “I was irrationally thinking we could maybe meet in early to mid-May and get it going and just do a sectional and a state. I was grasping at straws trying to get this done because we have an outstanding team.” Then Gov. JB Pritzker announced Friday scho...
Gabrielle Pastiak couldn't have an in-person discussion about the economy Tuesday with her fourth-graders at Oak School. So she posted a photo on Padlet and asked her students a simple question: "What's going on in this picture?" Their responses appear as sticky notes around the photo (see art). Other assignments on Tuesday involved calculating the volume of irregular shapes, reading a Newsela article on healthy otters and writing a response to a previous reading assignment...

When Jim Piontowski started his new job with the village of Hinsdale, Jimmy Carter was president. Sports fans were discovering a new source of sports information called ESPN, and Americans had yet to fall in love with Pac Man. A lot has changed in and around Hinsdale since January 21, 1980. But one constant is Piontowski, who for 40 years has enjoyed his job as building maintenance supervisor for the village he considers home. Although he now lives in nearby Darien with his...

Hinsdale Central senior Perry Zhao said he was pretty proud of his chess skills coming in to high school. Now, four years later, he credits his involvement on the school's chess team for prompting adjustments in his own attitude. "I was really cocky as a freshman," admitted Zhao, one of three team co-captains. "I think being on the chess team has really taught me about being a good person in general and a lot of valuable skills in leadership and dealing with people and...

The action was heating up at the Willowbrook Ice Arena Tuesday night, boards rattled by the slam of the puck, followed by the much larger crash with the impacts of players furiously chasing it. The Tuesday night match-up pitting the Hinsdale Central Hockey Club against Naperville North could be seen as one of redemption for the Red Devils after dropping the previous two in the Illinois West league playoff tournament. The team hadn’t lost two consecutive games all year, the r...
What's it like being a school counselor? Lisa Hikes works in the "heart" of Hinsdale Central High School. That's how her former boss described the counseling department, anyway, where Hikes and her colleagues address student needs ranging from lunchroom anxiety to college admissions. She's been walking alongside Red Devils for 19 years, helping to shape their evolution from freshman to senior. "We're really the only people in the building that will have students for four...
