When you all read this, I will be on the verge of waltzing, pending cooperation from my heels and spotty coordination, across Dickinson Field for the last time. A freshly retired Red Devil. And, as with every milestone, I find myself increasingly fixated on the future. I have even started pondering what I will pack for college this fall and what perhaps, I will be leaving behind. 1. An Illinois sweatshirt. This will not garner any popularity among my new classmates, but every...
We've all heard the flight attendant's speech: In the event the cabin loses pressure and the oxygen masks drop, secure your own mask before helping others. The directions might sound counterintuitive to those inclined to first tend to those in need of assistance. But if you don't take care of yourself, there's no way you'll be able to care for others. In the airplane example the instructions are clear and easy to follow. In many other situations in life, determining how to...

Before long, the streets of downtown Hinsdale will be dotted with brightly colored umbrellas as restaurants resume al fresco dining. OK, the umbrellas won’t be brightly colored (the village prefers neutral tones). But the overall appearance of outdoor eating areas will improve greatly, thanks to a new permit application process and design standards implemented by the Hinsdale Village Board. One of the biggest — and best, in our opinion — changes will be the elimination of the concrete jersey barriers to separate dining areas...
Hinsdale trustees Tuesday approved several outdoor dining permits as local eateries look to capitalize on the al fresco enthusiasm that’s been a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic. The permit applications were submitted with plans for each business’s outdoor space. Under an ordinance enacted last month, restaurants were granted continued use of downtown parking areas to set up their tables and chairs. The measure also established design guidelines to promote a more uniform look across the business district. “We found out t...
Hinsdale may straddle the county line, but it was the train line that truly put the village on the map. The mid-19th-century decision by Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad officials to run its railroad through the fledgling town instead of the more established Fullersburg one mile to the north was the beginning of the suburb residents know today. The downtown business district flourished near the main station. But well-heeled residents on the outskirts wanted closer access...

Walk a mile in my shoes. This phrase from days gone by encourages the practice of empathy. It fosters an understanding, awareness and sensitivity to others in need. It offers a place to start a conversation and begin to develop empathy. The Community House is kick starting its conversation on mental health with the nonprofit's 15th annual Walk the Walk fundraising event on Sunday, May 15. "A simple 1-mile walk outdoors benefits your mental health, but can also start a...
On a rainy April Friday, students at Hinsdale Central High School were digging holes to plant seeds and perennials near the rain gardens along 55th Street. The hope is that this summer, the plants will help sustain monarch butterflies and other pollinators. The initiative is part of the Rotary Club of Hinsdale's Operation Pollination, and the planting was the inaugural event of the club's Executive Junior Board. They got some help from friends in the school's Ecology Club....
I'm walking my dog by The Lane Elementary. As we approach, she eyes the bulky bulldogs guarding the front and goes down on her front paws, ready to play. But the dogs are made of concrete. Recent additions honoring the school's bulldog mascot, they are lovely. "Not real," I say on repeat. Trying to teach her a new command. She sniffs and realizes I'm right. We walk on. Cement dogs capture her curiosity. If you see a curious husky pulling toward your house to greet your dog...

May, the fifth month of the year, is named after Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility, spring and growth. Its attributes have been noted by a variety of poets over the years. Like Stephen Foster - "We roamed the fields and river sides, When we were young and gay; We chased the bees and plucked the flowers, In the merry, merry month of May." and John Burroughs - "When purple finches sing and soar ... With vernal gladness running o'er - When joys like these salute the sense ......
