  • Streets eyed as dining room alternatives

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 6, 2020

To help village restaurants recover from the economic hardship wrought by COVID-19, Hinsdale officials are considering converting central business district streets this summer to al fresco dining corridors. At Tuesday night’s village board meeting, Village President Tom Cauley credited village manager Kathleen Gargano with, shortly before the meeting, floating the idea of shutting off First Street between Garfield Avenue and Washington Street to vehicle traffic so the area can instead be used for outdoor dining. This will e...

  • Verizon 5G plans on hold for now, not forever

    Updated Apr 29, 2020

While we have been dealing with a worldwide pandemic, Verizon has been busy moving forward with their plans to install 4G/5G towers throughout Hinsdale. In a March letter to the village of Hinsdale, Verizon announced that they will begin submitting permit applications for new antenna towers. Although the new 5G technology may sound great, it is certainly not worth being a test community and having our front yard parkways filled with almost 150 unsightly cell towers soaring up to 45 feet tall with a refrigerator-sized power...

  • COVID-19 not the first pandemic to hit the village

    Cynthia Dieden|Updated Apr 22, 2020

When the Hinsdale Public Library celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2018, we perused old newspapers for nostalgia and remember seeing that the library closed its doors during the flu epidemic of 1918. At the time, it seemed like an interesting tidbit of an era past. We couldn't have known then that two years later, our physical building would be off limits again. As we watch the current pandemic unfold in real time, we wondered how Hinsdale was impacted in epidemics past. We...

"I was thinking that I was going to be closing down," she said, noting the coffee house doesn't carry many food items. One month later, she's still brewing up a storm at her 46 Village Place shop. It is slated to be torn down with little more than a collective yawn from the village board. Another local developer, when complimented on her recent purchase of a historically significant home, declared, “This one is going down.” In the 15 years since the New York Times deemed Hinsdale the epicenter of the teardown trend, all that we have to show f...

This has been a very stressful time for our front line first responders and medical staff. The Hinsdale Police and Fire departments are in need of N-95 masks and Chlorox wipes. They can be dropped off at the police or fire department at 121 Symonds Drive. A note, card or even a video offering thanks and encouragement would certainly go a long way in this difficult time. Notes can be mailed to either department at 121 Symonds Drive, Hinsdale, IL 60521. Or send cards to Hinsdale Hospital, 120 N Oak St., 60521, and they can...

What a difference a week makes. Last week, Gov. J.B.
