  • Hinsdale finds its happy place in the summer

    Updated May 29, 2024

May brought the Northern Lights and noisy cicadas to remind us of just what a fascinating planet we inhabit. Now on the doorstep of summer with June’s arrival Saturday, let’s remind ourselves of how much fun the community rolls out this season. The 51st annual Fine Arts Festival is in Burlington Park this weekend, featuring works by 85 participating artists (see story on Page 21). Monday, June 3, sees the return of the Farmers Market, another chamber event, at its familiar home on Chicago Avenue along Burlington Park. The...

  • High-speed electric 'bikes' now illegal

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 29, 2024

As of last week, electric bikes powered by batteries rated 750 watts and higher are no longer permitted in the village. "Some of these ebikes are upwards of 2,500 watts," Trustee Luke Stifflear said in introducing proposed changes to village ordinance at the May 21 Hinsdale Village Board meeting. One area of concern are high-performance dirt bikes that can travel more than 50 mph, Deputy Chief Tom Lillie wrote in a memo to trustees. "Riders have been witnessed with inadequate...

  • 'Gingerbread house' is heritage to savor

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 29, 2024

Having breathed new life into an historic R. Harold Zook-designed home several years earlier, Hinsdale's Mimi Collins was well-versed on the celebrated local architect. But Zook's 1920s-built cottage-like dwelling at 4 E. Fifth St. was not on her project wish list when it hit the market last year. After all, Collins had just gone to market with the 7,000-square-foot-plus Roaring Twenties château on Park Avenue that she'd spent two years rehabbing. "I had no intention of...

  • Honoring those lost in effort to keep all free

    Updated May 24, 2024

In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not...

  • History of crashes at Fuller's reviewed

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 22, 2024

Following residents’ comments at recent Hinsdale Village Board meetings regarding serious accidents at Fuller’s Car Wash, Village President Tom Cauley decided to do some research of his own. “There were a couple of residents who stood up and talked about previous accidents at the site, and it just didn’t ring a bell with me at all,” Cauley told The Hinsdalean Wednesday morning. “After that, I went back and had the police pull the reports and go through it. “It just didn’t jibe with what residents were saying had happened as...

  • Community leans on governmental branch

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 22, 2024

Hinsdale Seventh-Day Adventist Church wants to improve access for the disabled and the elderly to its building at 201. N. Oak St. by creating a new drive area. But a mature tree occupies the parkway where the driveway would go, a healthy and structurally sound tree that village staff has determined does not meet the criteria to grant the church’s application for removal. Enter the Tree Board. Consisting of Hinsdale Trustees Alexis Braden, Michelle Fisher, Matt Posthuma and Scott Banke, who serves as board chair, the body a...

  • Incentive program finds willing market

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 15, 2024

Historic homes in Hinsdale that in the past might have fallen victim to the wrecking ball are being saved thanks to village measures to promote preservation. The historic overlay district established in 2022 and the voluntary incentives like zoning relief and matching grant funds that go with district eligibility have persuaded a number of homeowners to remodel rather than raze, officials attest. "It seems like the zoning relief in and of itself was enough, in some cases, to...

  • Spring the perfect time to enjoy al fresco dining

    Updated May 15, 2024

If you didn’t enjoy a meal outside during Hinsdale Restaurant Week in April (it was still pretty chilly), now is the time to enjoy one outdoors. Al fresco dining has not always been part of the downtown Hinsdale landscape, but it was born of necessity during the pandemic in 2020. And Hinsdale residents, restaurateurs and officials found it to be a welcome addition. The outdoor dining scene took another step forward in 2022 when the Hinsdale Village Board instituted new design standards for outdoor eateries on public p...

  • Local products show college mettle

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 8, 2024

As the competitive spring high school seasons are winding down for local senior student-athletes, several former sports standouts from Hinsdale have reached the end of their college journeys. Most notably is Kiran Amegadjie, former Hinsdale Central and Yale University star offensive tackle who was chosen 75th overall by the Chicago Bears in last month’s NFL Draft. “It’s surreal,” he told The Hinsdalean this week about joining the professional ranks with his hometown team. W...

  • Couple shares story of ALS diagnosis

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 8, 2024

Brian Davis and Katy McNeil began their married life as so many couples do - living in Chicago with plans to start a family one day and move to a house in the suburbs. They met in 2012 as law school students at the University of Michigan and married in 2016. Their first daughter, Ada, arrived four years later. When Ada was still a toddler, Brian began noticing various physical changes. He experienced difficulty swallowing and sometimes slurred his words. The first neurologist...

  • Happy Historic Preservation Month, Hinsdale

    Updated May 8, 2024

Historic preservation seems to be experiencing a renaissance, if you will, in Hinsdale. Meetings of the Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission, which once were dominated by requests to tear down historic homes and rebuild new ones, now are filled with homeowners requesting preservation incentives such as zoning relief, property tax rebates and expedited processing. We’re pleased to see this development, as we’ve long been advocates for preserving the homes that add charm and character to the village — the very homes that...

  • Something old, something new in Robbins

    Updated May 8, 2024

Village officials estimate about 31 homes have been torn down in the Robbins Park subdivision since it became a National Register Historic District in 2009. Among those are the homes we're highlighting today with photos of the original structure and what was built in its place. All have been demolished since 2017. n The home at 120 E. Fifth St. was an Italianate built in 1863 for William Robbins. Robbins was the second president of Hinsdale and was one of the individuals who...

  • Fuller's to get higher-grade bollards

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 8, 2024

Commercial-grade, crash-tested bollards will be installed at Fuller’s Car Wash, according to Hinsdale officials, replacing previously erected protective fixtures that critics argued were insufficient to prevent another collision like the one that claimed the life of 14-year-old Sean Richards last summer. At Tuesday’s village board meeting, Village President Tom Cauley reported that the manufactured bollards are the kind used at schools, hospitals and other institutions and designed to stop a 5,000-pound vehicle going 40 mil...

  • Robbins Park infiltrated by new homes

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 1, 2024

Drive down some streets in Robbins Park and only a closer look reveals homes have been torn down and rebuilt. On other blocks, new homes outnumber original ones. Some new construction blends in with the historic neighborhood. Other houses, due to size or design, clearly look out of place. This is true of many residential neighborhoods in Hinsdale, but Robbins Park has been a National Register Historic District since 2008. At that time, 65 percent of its 475 homes were deemed...
