  • Thankful Turkey never lies

    Lex Silberberg|Updated Nov 26, 2024

It's November in Hinsdale and you know what that means: CHRISTMAS IS HERE! I always marvel at how fast halls are decked and stockings are hung in our village mere hours after Halloween candy bowls are emptied, but our family takes a slightly slower approach. I'm not saying I haven't checked our lights to make sure all bulbs are functioning or sorted decorations, but Thanksgiving is the real MVP around here. It's not so much about the food (though my mom's twice-baked potatoes...

  • Hinsdaleans have so many reasons to give thanks

    Updated Nov 26, 2024

“A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.” — Cicero As we sit at the table on Thanksgiving, many will take time to list all the things for which they are grateful. In what has become an annual tradition at the paper, we dedicate this space today to name all the things for which we — and all Hinsdaleans — can be thankful, one for each day leading up to and including the holiday. Nov. 1 — the loved ones we’ve lost and remember today, All Saints’ Day Nov. 2 — anyone who had th...

  • 55th Street TIF plan is pared down

    Ken Knutson|Updated Nov 21, 2024

Hinsdale High School District 86 and Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 would feel much less financial impact from a proposed tax increment financing district along 55th Street in Clarendon Hills under a new deal put forward. At the Clarendon Hills Village Board meeting Monday night, trustees approved by a 6-1 vote an intergovernmental agreement with the districts that significantly scales back the scope of the TIF by removing the Jewel-Osco and PNC properties and...

  • Village dedicates new Memorial Building Plaza

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 21, 2024

Hinsdale officials, donors and residents celebrated the completion of the Memorial Building Plaza Tuesday on a remarkably mild November night. "This is the first time I've seen this done and I'm very impressed with the way it turned out," Village President Tom Cauley said in his remarks. "This project was a good example of cooperation between the village of Hinsdale board and the Hinsdale Library and the generosity of members of the Hinsdale community." Cauley noted that the...

  • Letter - Taxpayers shouldn't fund historic preservation

    Updated Nov 20, 2024

Allowing the village to pick and choose homes in Hinsdale to get special treatment at the expense of taxpayers is totally inappropriate and un-American. Specifically, in regard to the Frank Lloyd Wright house at 121 S. County Line, a simple Google search returns pages of privately funded organizations designed to help save and rehab Frank Lloyd Wright homes. I suggest the owners look to those organizations for assistance rather than their neighbors’ wallets. As for other owners of multi-million dollar “historically sig...

  • December time for fa-la-la-la-la levies

Ken Knutson and Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 13, 2024

Village, library and school boards in Hinsdale are in the midst of approving tentative levies — or annual requests for property tax revenue — before the final levy is adopted in December. The levy requests will be submitted to the clerks in DuPage and Cook counties, who will translate them into tax rates that will appear on homeowners’ bills in 2024. Charts breaking down each of the levies, with an explanation of the taxing cycle and a glossary, are on Page 5. Village of Hinsdale Hinsdale trustees will request about $9.1...

  • Bagley House owners eye public funds

    Ken Knutson|Updated Nov 13, 2024

Hinsdale's only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home is poised to get a financial boost from taxpayers to defray costs of renovating the historic residence. At the Hinsdale Village Board meeting Nov. 7, trustees signaled their approval for a property tax rebate and a $10,000 matching grant to offset the cost of restoring and updating 121 S. County Line Road, the 1894-built Dutch Colonial known as the Bagley House. During a first read of a resolution to enter into a preservation in...

  • Understanding state's property tax cycle

    Updated Nov 13, 2024

The property tax is largest single tax in Illinois and is the major source of revenue for Community Consolidated District 181 and Hinsdale High School District 86. The village of Hinsdale also relies on property taxes as a significant source of funding, as does the Hinsdale Public Library, although the village has several other revenue streams to support operations. Taxing bodies are required each year to file a levy, or a request for property tax revenue. Setting the levy...

  • Police hope to put brakes on violations

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 6, 2024

Police want to remind parents that certain e-bikes are prohibited in Hinsdale. The Hinsdale Village Board passed an ordinance earlier this year prohibiting bikes powered by more than 750 watts and regulating the use of low-powered bikes, scooters and other devices in the village. Since that time, police have issued more than 60 warnings and citations to riders who have violated state law and village regulations. Deputy Chief Tom Lillie said that number doesn't surprise him....

  • Three-way split

    Updated Oct 30, 2024

Several thunder storms moved through Hinsdale in the early hours of Friday morning, Oct.25. The storms swept across the village with flashes of light and loud crashes - and only one lightening strike reported at a home in the 700 block of South Stough. The tree split three ways, with one large branch falling on the home, one branch falling across the street and the third branch falling in front of a neighbor's home. The main water line into the home was damaged as well,...

  • Ladies lead with hope for Wellness House benefit

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 16, 2024

Hinsdale's Katie Isadore and Pamela Pontikis are wrapping up last-minute tasks in advance of Saturday's Wellness House Ball. "We're expecting around 500 people in attendance," said Isadore, co-chair with Pontikis of the cancer support organization's annual fundraiser. "I feel like we're in a really good place." Perhaps their wisest move was forming a committee early to amplify their work by reaching out to the members' own respective networks. "It's about sharing the mission...
