After spending months with a classroom full of 3-year-olds, summer is a particularly quiet time for Kathy Behrens, teaching assistant at Hinsdale Covenant Preschool. Behrens was a preschooler herself when her family first moved to the village. And while her life has included stints in Texas, Minnesota and London, Hinsdale has always been home, Behrens said. It's where she and husband Chris, a Darien native, raised their three children, and where Behrens found her unexpected...
A nutty idea - This photo in Sandy Williams' book, "Images of America - Hinsdale," shows the home located at 219 E. Third St., which was built in 1887 by a "public-spirited" Deming Preston. "He noted an absence in his new prairie community - it had no squirrels. To rectify this, Preston and other residents purchased several dozen pair to populate the village. In addition to this successful effort, the resourceful Preston served as a local bank president, volunteer fire chief,...
Winter coats are common attire for Illinois residents when they head to the polls for the primary election. They won’t be necessary this year. The Illinois primary, which typically takes place March 15, was moved to June 28 when Senate Bill 825 became law last year. This isn’t the first time the primary date has changed. In 2008, it was moved to early February to help bolster the chances of then-Sen. Barack Obama is his bid for the presidency. It was held again in February in 2010 and moved back to March in 2012. The pri...

After a chilly April and soggy May, summer can’t come fast enough for most of us. Although the season doesn’t officially move in until June 21, the unofficial Memorial Day weekend kickoff sure was steamy enough to get us dreaming of what’s to come. So here are our top 10 reasons why we love summer in Hinsdale. 10. The farmers market The annual outdoor mart offering a range of products from produce and meats to juice and natural remedies opens this Monday along Chicago Avenue adjacent to Burlington Park and continues every...
The Memorial Day weekend heat wave arrived at just the right time for the opening of the Hinsdale Community Pool. Heather Bereckis, superintendent of parks and recreation for the village, said attendance built over the course of the first weekend of the season, culminating in the largest group of swimmers and sun seekers on Monday. "Windy conditions on Saturday kept some people away, so there wasn't as big of a crowd," Bereckis said. "We definitely saw the biggest crowds (on...
The need to forage for loose change in order to park on downtown Hinsdale streets will soon be in the rearview mirror. On June 1, the village's new three-hour parking zone takes effect for the central business district, replacing the longstanding parking meters with high-tech license plate reader technology to enforce compliance. Hinsdale trustees approved the change last month, saying the limited free parking is more efficient way to manage downtown supply and protect spaces...
Ever notice the stars in relief on the top corners of the front door of 25 E. First St.? Or the red bell mounted on the brick wall? Both are clues as to the original use of the building, which now is home to Hinsdale Bank and Trust. The Colonial Revival building there and the adjoining one were built in 1935 as Works Progress Administration projects to house the village's police and fire stations. They were designed by Hinsdale architect Harford Field. The fire station had...
Early multi-use building - This photo in Sandy Williams' book, "Images of America - Hinsdale," is of the hook and ladder group in front of the town hall at 25 E. First St. about 1890. "The fire department began as a group of merchants who volunteered to protect the wooden buildings in the downtown area. Later, a hose company and separate hook and ladder group were established, merging in 1893 to form the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department." This building, constructed in 1887,...
Mary Martha Gill Teschner, 91, a former longtime Hinsdale resident, died peacefully May 12, 2022, in Naperville. A dedicated art educator - especially for children - Mary was a docent for 40 years at the Art Institute of Chicago and more than a decade for the Naples Museum of Art in Florida; a picture lady in elementary school classrooms; and art program presenter at assisted living communities throughout the Chicago suburbs. She was co-owner for nearly 40 years of The Doings...
Before long, the streets of downtown Hinsdale will be dotted with brightly colored umbrellas as restaurants resume al fresco dining. OK, the umbrellas won’t be brightly colored (the village prefers neutral tones). But the overall appearance of outdoor eating areas will improve greatly, thanks to a new permit application process and design standards implemented by the Hinsdale Village Board. One of the biggest — and best, in our opinion — changes will be the elimination of the concrete jersey barriers to separate dining areas...
Hinsdale trustees Tuesday approved several outdoor dining permits as local eateries look to capitalize on the al fresco enthusiasm that’s been a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic. The permit applications were submitted with plans for each business’s outdoor space. Under an ordinance enacted last month, restaurants were granted continued use of downtown parking areas to set up their tables and chairs. The measure also established design guidelines to promote a more uniform look across the business district. “We found out t...
Hinsdale may straddle the county line, but it was the train line that truly put the village on the map. The mid-19th-century decision by Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad officials to run its railroad through the fledgling town instead of the more established Fullersburg one mile to the north was the beginning of the suburb residents know today. The downtown business district flourished near the main station. But well-heeled residents on the outskirts wanted closer access...
Little did I know when I was looking for a job in the spring of 1988 that one day I would write about an event that had thwarted those efforts. Thirty-four years ago last week, on May 8, 1988, the Illinois Bell switching station on Second and Lincoln streets caught fire, destroying phone lines to 35,000 homes in Hinsdale and nearby towns. The affected area included Willowbrook, where my parents had purchased a condo my senior year of college, eagerly anticipating the day I...

Almost 100 years ago, the first students walked to their first day of classes at Monroe School. "It was a great and important day in 1928 when the pupils in Maple School packed their books and made the pilgrimage over to their beautiful new building, the Monroe School," Marie Loomis, former principal, reminisced in a document from the Hinsdale Historical Society files dated March 26, 1973. Enrollment in Hinsdale was growing rapidly at the time. In the fall of 1925, the year Ma...
A teardown ahead of its time - This photo in Sandy Williams' book, "Images of America - Hinsdale," shows a home where the Memorial Building currently is located. "Built for C.T. Warren in the 1870s, this home stood on the site now occupied by the Memorial Building. Warren and his two brothers, all early Hinsdaleans, were partners in a Chicago grain business. In 1926, the vacant home was acquired by the village and demolished to allow for the construction of Hinsdale's...
Feeling the impact of the tight labor market, Hinsdale officials have boosted village pay rates in a bid to stay competitive with other municipalities. At the May 3 village board meeting, trustees approved increases to the pay plans for full- and part-time employees, public service workers and seasonal staff, retroactive to May 1. The board held a brief discussion on the measure following the proposal’s introduction at the April 26 board meeting by Trustee Matt Posthuma. “The pay plans consist of a range and steps of pay bas...
Could there be a simple solution to two problems, one facing District 181 and the other the village Of Hinsdale? Unacceptable proposals for the long vacant land at the intersection of Ogden and Adams, owned by IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principles) have once again been withdrawn by Ryan Co., leaving the possibility of dividing that property and satisfying two needs at once. 1) The NW corner of the Ogden/Adams Intersection includes 7.5 acres with an already existing building on a parcel zoned IB (institutional building)...
May is National Preservation Month, and, in so many ways, Hinsdale is a veritable exhibit of how retaining historic architecture — whether residential, commercial or public in nature — can enrich a town’s character and enhance its livability. We have taken the opportunity over the years to bring our readers inside many of these vintage treasures, sharing stories of the people and/or events that brought them into existence and how their caretakers today maintain their essence while still equipping them with the ameni...
Fifty-three Hinsdale residents have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past week. The DuPage County Health Department reported 44 new cases, and the Cook County Health Department reported nine new cases. That brings the total number of reported cases in the village to 3,819, compared to 3,766 last week. AdventHealth Hinsdale is no longer reporting on cases. Hinsdale High School District 86 reported 17 positive cases as of April 29, including five staff members, seven students at Central and five students at South....
In the late 19th-century, the west side of Hinsdale was home to an enclave of German immigrants. These faithful churchgoers would tread the village's wooden sidewalks to the north of Plank Road (today's Ogden Avenue) every Sunday to attend St. John Evangelical Church of Fullersburg. In 1898, weary of the distance and at odds with the church's new pastor, several decided to establish their own congregation. They called upon Brookfield pastor Rev. Carl Luedeke to lead the new...
Summer road construction is underway in Hinsdale. Garfield Avenue on Monday was closed between Fourth and Seventh streets as part of a $2.1 million project to rebuild the street between First and 55th streets in concrete. The roadway will be rebuilt in four sections, said Al Diaz, assistant village engineer. The second phase will be just north of the first. "We actually stipulated that the section of Garfield from First to Fourth streets should be addressed when the middle...
