Changes that would make improve benefits for government employees hired since 2011 could be on the table when lawmakers return to Springfield in January. The General Assembly passed legislation in 2010 to create a second tier of state pension benefits in hopes of reducing long-term liabilities. But the latest benefits structure for employees entering the government workforce after 2010, known as Tier 2, has raised concerns about its compliance with Social Security and fairness. Not all public employees are covered by Social...
Toni Patisserie & Café had its busiest holiday season ever this year, owner Toni Cox said. "Both Thanksgiving and Christmas we did way more than our projections, and our projections are pretty aggressive," Cox said last week. "We were pleasantly surprised." The buche de Noel (yule log) cake, stollen and cookies were the biggest sellers. "Cookies were crazy. We had a hard time keeping up with them," Cox said. For the first time this year, the shop sold hors d'oeuvres for...

8 has been a remarkable year for our library. Two full years into the implementation of the strategic plan our community developed with us, it feels like we have more momentum and a clearer sense of purpose than ever before. Library programs that educate and enrich our community continue to find and connect new audiences. One new tradition that has really taken off is the library’s Mid-Autumn Moon Festival celebration. Hundreds of people joined us for live music, crafts, a...
This is my final year-end letter to Hinsdale residents as village president. When I became village president in 2009, fixing the village’s finances was a top priority. In 2008, Hinsdale risked a credit rating downgrade when a bond rating agency placed Hinsdale on “Negative Outlook.” Since 2008, Hinsdale has maintained a stable AAA bond rating. Only about 15 percent of Illinois municipalities can make that claim. While keeping the village on a firm financial footing, we have...
Twenty years ago Eva Field had an interview with Jan Anderson for a part-time assistant director position at the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce. The two clearly hit it off. "Three hours later, I left with the job," Field said. Last week Field spent her last day with the chamber, retiring as president and chief executive officer. She said she's leaving the nonprofit in a good place. "The chamber has moved into a healthy direction for the last several years," Field said. "I do...

A mid-December arctic blast served as a reminder, lest anyone had forgotten, of what Chicago winters typically have in store. So Adam King was quick to enter each store as he toured downtown Hinsdale for the final installment of this year's gift guide. King, a Hinsdale native and 2010 graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, is no foe of the elements, however, as director of sales at his family's King's Landscape Design right here in the village. He relishes breathing new...
A $1.1 million federal grant could make the difference in whether historic Sixth Street is paved in asphalt or bricks when the road is reconstructed next year. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, who represents Hinsdale, is championing a grant for the sewer work on Sixth as part of a larger infrastructure bill that Congress is likely to approve before the end of the year. “I’m not sure there’s an appetite for...

Community Consoli-dated Elementary District 181 Board members Monday approved an intergovernmental agreement with Clarendon Hills that dramatically reduces the amount of tax revenue the district could potentially lose under the TIF. “It’s been a journey,” said Mindy Bradford, assistant superintendent for business and operation...

"Baby Jesus doesn't get put into the nativity until midnight," St. John said. Earlier that evening, the family enjoys the traditional feast of the seven fishes for Christmas...
