Hinsdale firefighter/paramedics Mike Lorusso and James Lauber extinguish the flames in the fire demonstration rooms during the annual Fire and Police open house Saturday. This year, much like many Hinsdaleans, the fire department built an addition. It expanded their demonstration rooms to show the difference it makes in a house fire if the bedroom door is closed. "Close before you dose" was the theme of the program, and the proof was in the fire as it spread quickly when the...

Meet Martino! He used to live outside, but now all he wants to do is be with people. Martino lives in the offices at Hinsdale Humane Society, but what he really wants is a home so he can get love even after working hours are over. He is a fun, goofy guy who loves to play just as much as he loves to nap. He would make a wonderful companion for someone who works from home. Martino is 2 years old, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He loves other cats but tries to fight...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 16, 2024

Just what is the "right" college? Is it a highly selective school? One that specializes in a particular major? Large or small? Near or far? Hinsdale's Jonathan Hurley is beginning to think about those questions. In addition to taking several honors and AP classes, the Hinsdale Central junior has swim team practice, club meetings and activities, homework, trumpet practice and ACT prep tutoring. "Right now, it's just about building the resume. That's probably the most important...

The last time voters were asked to pay more was in a 2006 referendum, noted Karie Friling, the forest district’s executive director. “A lot...

  • Zook designed abodes with his heart

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 9, 2024

Every detail mattered to R. Harold Zook. The Hinsdale-based architect, whose early 20th-century interpretations of the traditional English cottage became iconic features of the local landscape, was as involved with the interior finishings as with the outward elevations. Mimi Collins is appreciative of that Zook quality as she rehabs his century-old gem at 4 E. Fifth St. "I love all his hand-forged hardware. The light fixtures and curtain rods, all the hand-hammered work," she...

Pictured here in 1938, a public works employee is seen performing maintenance on the newly installed flagpole at Burns Field. This image is from the 1938-39 Public Works Department Annual Report, which humorously captioned it, "This is the way we are most of the time - 'up in the air.'" (photo courtesy of...
