    Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 29, 2023

The Hinsdale Central boys swimming and diving team starts its season as the defending state champions and National Champions, according to Swim Cloud's ranking. The team hopes for a repeat at state. The boys wrestling program, which lost a number of athletes to graduation in May, is looking to gain experience and fill some holes in the lineup. The girls wrestling team is expected to improve as it transitions from the sport's inaugural season to a more typical competitive...

  • Relays, Bokos help team place fifth

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 16, 2023

The Hinsdale Central girls swim and dive team's fifth-place finish at the IHSA state finals last weekend at FNC Natatorium in Westmont doesn't truly reflect all the girls accomplished. "It was perfect," varsity head coach Bob Barber said. "I think the girls swam really well." Senior Burley Bokos broke two school records at the meet. Her time of 2:03.12 in the preliminaries for the 200-yard individual medley beat the record held by the late Kendall Pickering. Bokos also broke...

9U TEAM GIVES ALL despite adversity It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon for football with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. The Lyons Football Club came to Dickinson Field to avenge an earlier loss to the Falcons. The Falcons had a bit of bad luck before the game with a couple of players ill, but it was next “man” up. The Tigers struck first on a long touchdown run and the extra point for a 7-0 lead. More bad luck befell the Falcons, as a few players were injured. The Falcons’ offense was stymied, but the Tigers were...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Nov 8, 2023

By Ken Knutson [email protected] Last year as a junior, Hinsdale Central's Aden Bandukwala became the first individual state champion in the history of the school's cross country program. Now he's the first to do it twice. In a personal best three-mile time of 14:13.56 on Saturday, Bandukwala took first-place honors for the second straight year at the IHSA 3A state meet in Peoria. Bandukwala said he felt confident going into the meet that he could accomplish the...

  • Jezioro 'bringing the fire' to new job

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 1, 2023

Hinsdale Central athletic director Mike Jezioro never planned to become a teacher, much less a coach. He was nearing the start of his senior year at Glenbard East High School when the teachers went on strike, causing the varsity football team on which he played to forfeit its first game. "As a 17-year-old boy, that was the most traumatic, horrible thing," Jezioro said. "I couldn't believe that adults had that much effect over us." So he abandoned his plans to study computer en...

9U WINS FIRST PLAYOFF GAME It was chilly but dry Sunday morning as the 9U Falcons took Dickinson Field for their opening playoff game. The Bartlett Raiders came to town looking to spoil the Falcons’ undefeated season; however, the young Falcons prevailed with a hard-fought 21-0 victory. The offense stalled on its first drive of the game, but the Falcon D picked got the ball back to them four plays later. This time they methodically drove the ball toward the goal line. Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 25, 2023

Burley Bokos Hinsdale When did you start swimming competitively? I was on a team when I was 5. How did you end up distance swimming? Both of my parents swam at the University of Tampa, so we come from a very strong swimming background, and they were both distance swimmers. They were always willing to help me, and I always found it super-fascinating that not a lot of swimmers can swim distance races like I can. How have you improved since your freshman year? Sophomore and...

  • Girls tennis places fifth at state

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 25, 2023

The two-time defending state champion Hinsdale Central girls tennis team went into the IHSA state meet last weekend having qualified in just three of four possible spots and with only one of five players with previous state experience. Long odds for a three-peat, to say the least. But the Red Devils still made their mark in Buffalo Grove Oct. 19-21, claiming a share of fifth place with Glenbrook North and Plainfield North, all registering 15 points. New Trier cruised to the...
