Carter Contreras Hinsdale What are you feeling as the football season begins? Obviously I'm super excited. The most important thing for me as a senior and team captain is leading my team. How do you try and lead as captain? I think it's important to teach the younger guys and the guys who haven't played in big games how to keep yourself calm and controlled in tense situations. I looked up to my team captains, and they definitely helped me push through the challenges and that...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 9, 2023

The 11-year-olds on the Hinsdale Little League All-Star team weren't content with just one state title. So the boys, who won the championship last year as 10-year-olds, offered a repeat performance this year, beating Elmhurst 9-0 Aug. 2 to become the best 11U team in the state. "Of the 13 kids that were on our team, 11 were on the team last year," coach John O'Toole said. "They leaned on their experience from 2022 when we won the 8/9/10 division in Illinois." The team...

  • Boys 4x800 relay sizzles at nationals

    Ken Knutson|Updated Jul 5, 2023

Last year, Hinsdale Central's 4x800-meter relay team set the Hayward Field record at the Nike Outdoor Nationals high school track meet on the campus of the University of Oregon. Their blistering time of 7:32.15 would be tough to match at this year's event June 15-19. But with returning champions Aden Bandukwala, Michael Skora and Daniel Watcke, along with newcomer but recent state titlist Grant Miller, the group felt they could kick into an even higher gear. "State was a huge...

Dan Jones never intended to become an athletic director. But when DeKalb High School administrators couldn't find an outside candidate to hire, they turned to their head football coach to take the job. "I told them I would, but it would only be one year - and that was 18 years ago," Jones said. He never intended to work at Hinsdale Central, either. But two AD friends he met for breakfast at a conference told him about an open position. "They started talking to me about the...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Jun 21, 2023

Hinsdale Central's boys gymnastics program was the envy of the state 50 years ago, winning four straight Illinois High School Association titles from 1970-73. The team's championship in 1995 made nine total, still more than any other school. It's a record that may now never be broken as the IHSA has decided to discontinue the boys gymnastics state series due to low participation. In a June 12 press release announcing the end of both the boys gymnastics and debate state series,...
