Luke Schroeder also contributed to the scoring effort with a spectacular 58-yard t...
Caroline Owens Hinsdale What's your mindset heading into your senior golf season? It's a great team, so we're hoping to win state again. I just want to have a lot of fun with my friends and enjoy all the things that Hinsdale Central has to offer. How has your game improved in the last four years? I've gotten stronger by working out a lot more, so I'm able to hit the ball a lot further. My course management has also improved. I'm able to play a lot smarter than when I was a...

Carter Contreras Hinsdale What are you feeling as the football season begins? Obviously I'm super excited. The most important thing for me as a senior and team captain is leading my team. How do you try and lead as captain? I think it's important to teach the younger guys and the guys who haven't played in big games how to keep yourself calm and controlled in tense situations. I looked up to my team captains, and they definitely helped me push through the challenges and that...
For the first installment in our preview series of Hinsdale Central's fall sports squads, we look at the boys and girls cross country squads and the football teams. Both running programs are relying on younger team members to pick up the pace to continue their state-level success. The Red Devil gridiron gang, meanwhile, eyes a return to the playoffs after missing out last season. The series will continue in the Sept. 7 and 14 issues. Here's what each of the head coaches had...

The 11-year-olds on the Hinsdale Little League All-Star team weren't content with just one state title. So the boys, who won the championship last year as 10-year-olds, offered a repeat performance this year, beating Elmhurst 9-0 Aug. 2 to become the best 11U team in the state. "Of the 13 kids that were on our team, 11 were on the team last year," coach John O'Toole said. "They leaned on their experience from 2022 when we won the 8/9/10 division in Illinois." The team...
GUTMAN MAKES MOVE WESTWARD Major League Soccer player and Hinsdale native Andrew Gutman was traded to the Colorado Rapids by Atlanta United FC on July 5. “We’re delighted to add a player of Andrew’s quality and experience to our roster during this transfer window,” said Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith in a statement. “Andrew is an attacking fullback in his prime and possesses the physical attributes and mentality that we are keen to bring into our group. With 1,827.5 points amassed in 12 events, Olivia Zhang is the current leader in the girls age 14-15 division of the Illinois Junior Golf Association. Two years ago the Hinsdale teen was still learning how to swing. "I had played many other sports but hadn't really clicked with them," Zhang related. "In 2021 when I started playing golf, I was like, 'Oh, I'm actually good at this!' " On June 30 Zhang notched her third victory of her 2023 campaign, carding a season-best 79 to...
Last year, Hinsdale Central's 4x800-meter relay team set the Hayward Field record at the Nike Outdoor Nationals high school track meet on the campus of the University of Oregon. Their blistering time of 7:32.15 would be tough to match at this year's event June 15-19. But with returning champions Aden Bandukwala, Michael Skora and Daniel Watcke, along with newcomer but recent state titlist Grant Miller, the group felt they could kick into an even higher gear. "State was a huge...
Dan Jones never intended to become an athletic director. But when DeKalb High School administrators couldn't find an outside candidate to hire, they turned to their head football coach to take the job. "I told them I would, but it would only be one year - and that was 18 years ago," Jones said. He never intended to work at Hinsdale Central, either. But two AD friends he met for breakfast at a conference told him about an open position. "They started talking to me about the...
Hinsdale Central's boys gymnastics program was the envy of the state 50 years ago, winning four straight Illinois High School Association titles from 1970-73. The team's championship in 1995 made nine total, still more than any other school. It's a record that may now never be broken as the IHSA has decided to discontinue the boys gymnastics state series due to low participation. In a June 12 press release announcing the end of both the boys gymnastics and debate state series,...
