McClear, a University of Iowa senior and two-time All-Big Ten honoree, avenged his loss in last year’s tournament in a three-way playoff. McClear had a busy summer, including reaching the final U.S. Open qualifying event in June in Springfield, Ohio, and competing in the U.S. Amateur Championship last month at the Ridgewood Country Club in...

Kyle Doorhy Senior Westmont What got you hooked on cross country? My older brother Ryan ran and we'd always go to his meets when I was a kid. I thought, "I can run and be successful as well." What do you love about the sport? I really like the team aspect and running with the same people everyday and developing close bonds with my teammates. How does the sport challenge you? It's definitely one of the most mentally demanding sports, in my opinion. It's more of a fight against...

I used to play other team sports like soccer and basketball and baseball. I feel like it’s a different type of team chemistry. Teddy Ouimette scampered to the outside and was a shoelace away from giving the Falcons...
Every member of Hinsdale's three Little League All-Star teams had winning on their mind as they traveled to the state tournament in Moline. Chances are none of them expected to also make history. Jerry Thomas' 42nd Race to Mackinac is another for the books, and one that he and the crews of all 242 vessels that embarked on the annual race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Mich., aren't likely to forget. "It was very challenging," Thomas said upon completing the trek. He said the crew of the Winnebago worked against three bouts of high winds that peaked at more than 70 miles per hour, as well as heavy rains and thunderstorms. Thomas said the goal of the six-member crew...
Competing against the nation's best at the 2022 Special Olympic USA Games June 5-12 in Orlando, Fla., Danny Baker, to borrow a phrase, stuck the landing. The Hinsdale native brought home four gold medals, one silver and two bronzes in his debut at the quadrennial event representing Team Illinois. "You know what makes me happy? Gold!," asserted Danny, speaking at his home earlier this month. Danny, 32, was selected to be part of the state's 67-member contingent for the Games....
When sisters Ariel and Vania Leung head to the pool, it's rarely for a leisurely soak. As members of the Underwater Hockey Club of Chicago, a trip to the pool means they are prepared for a workout. "It's a very niche sport," said Ariel, a native of Hinsdale who recently settled in La Grange. She learned of the sport from her sister and brother-in-law, Hinsdale resident Brian Lin. Lin is a former member of the University of Illinois club and a current member of the Chicago...

The first year Bob Barber was head coach of the boys swim and dive team, Hinsdale Central won its first state title in 26 years. This past year, he led the boys and girls swim teams to second-place finishes. And he was named the Illinois Swimming and Diving Association best coach of the year for boys and girls.
