  • Team enjoys last chance to play ball

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jul 29, 2020

all team captain Charlie Williams learned this spring that the season was over, a goal he and his teammates had been working toward disappeared overnight. "We were basically told the whole time that we're working to play our senior year," he said. "That was gone. That was a huge bummer." Williams and the other seniors on the team had been playing together in Devil Baseball since the program was founded. And they hoped to contend for a conference championship this year....

    Ken Knutson|Updated Jul 22, 2020

The pro sports world is emerging from its COVID-19 quarantine, and that's good news for Hinsdale's Andrew Gutman. In his second year with the Major League Soccer team FC Cincinnati, the 23-year-old defender got back to competition this month with the MLS Is Back Tournament - sans fans - in the "bubble" of the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. He opened up to The Hinsdalean in this Q&A via email about his journey over the last several months. What went...

  • Coach enjoys job whether on, off the ice

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jul 15, 2020

Hockey has been part of Christian Hmura's life for as long as he can remember. "I got my sixth, seventh and eighth concussions in the last nine months of me playing, and I just wasn't able to really bounce back, he said. "I had some major issues with that for while." With his career as a player out of the question, Hmura, then 19, turned to coaching. "Obviously I wanted to stay involved in the game," said Hmura, who is now 33 and a Hinsdale resident. "It was my entire life up...

The Illinois High School Association announced its Phase 4 Return to Play Plan last week as Hinsdale Central and other schools look to restore their athletic programs amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The guidelines, which were given a stamp of approval by the Illinois Department of Public Health, allow gatherings of up to 50 individuals indoors or outdoors, with multiple groups allowed outdoors provided they are separated by a distance of at least 30 feet. Athletes must be scr...

  • Captains had plans for final seasons

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jul 1, 2020

Today we present the final installment of athlete profiles that did not run during the spring season, which was canceled due to COVID-19. Name: Chloe Lapointe Year: senior Hometown: Burr Ridge What was it like not having a senior water polo season? I actually tore my labrum before the Red-White meet. That was my first and last game. It was going to be my last game anyway because of my shoulder, but not being able to play because of coronavirus and my shoulder (was...

  • Athletes were Central to teams' spirit

    Ken Knutson|Updated Jun 24, 2020

The short-circuited spring high school sports calendar sadly meant no final campaigns for many senior Central student-athletes. Consequently, The Hinsdalean did not run our normal series of seasonal athlete profiles - until now. Over these last several weeks we've been serving up delayed recognition for (now former) Red Devils who, according to coaches, brought their best to their respective programs, whether in the heat of competition or in fostering team unity. Today's...

  • Red Devils had an impact on teams

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jun 17, 2020

Athlete profiles typically are part of our sports pages throughout the school year, with a different team member recommended each week by his or her coach. With the spring season canceled due to COVID-19, The Hinsdalean altered its sports coverage, eliminating the round-up page on which the profiles ran. We are happy to highlight these athletes now in a four-part series that began June 11. Today's athletes competed on the track, boys water polo and girls lacrosse teams. Name:...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Mar 18, 2020

The race to stop COVID-19 has meant unfortunate halts to many normal rhythms in society, with sports disruptions being among the more high-profile. Locally, Hinsdale student-athletes competing at the college level have seen their seasons abruptly ended, while Hinsdale Central spring athletes remain in limbo. Village-based leagues have also had to make significant adjustments. Central graduate Mia Chiappe was preparing to swim with her Denison University teammates at the NCAA...
