    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 18, 2019

Name: Anna Gruvberger Year: senior Hometown: Hinsdale What was your vision heading into senior year? This year I'm team captain, and a big goal for me is that I really want the whole team to just be as close as possible. I really want everyone to be super close and help make all of us have a super season. When did you make swimming a serious pursuit? I've been swimming since I was 4 or 5. When I was a freshman I knew I wanted to swim in college just because high school...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 16, 2019

Name: Nick Franko Year: senior Hometown: Clarendon Hills Why do you prefer football to individual sports? I think it's the camaraderie on the team. With football, you can't win a game without everyone working as a unit. Are you better at playing offense or defense? Maybe defense just because I've been playing it longer. This year I started playing both ways. Do you have a preference? I really don't. I'll do whatever my coach tells me to do. Do you have any pre-game rituals or...

"All in." That's the theme of the Hinsdale Central football program this year. Offense and defense. Juniors and seniors. Males and females. Wait, what? Yes, it's true. Look closely at the next game and you might spot coach Allison Fish working with defensive players on the sidelines and blond braids extending from the helmet of No. 34, wide receiver Chiara Gregor. The two make joining a group of 80 players and half a dozen coaches - none of whom are women - look easy, varsity...

  • New management for paddle tennis

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 16, 2019

Platform tennis is growing in popularity in the Chicago area. The number of teams in the Chicago Platform Tennis Men's League has increased 27 percent over the past five years, with several nearby country clubs building courts and huts during that same time period. Hinsdale is now poised to capitalize on that growth. After being run for 15 years by the village of Hinsdale, the Hinsdale Platform Tennis Association has taken over the program. "We're excited," HPTA President...

  • Freshmen making varsity waves

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 16, 2019

On Friday, the Hinsdale Central varsity girls swim team vanquished conference rival Lyons Township by an impressive margin of 108-78. Even more notable is the fact that a primary source of those points was the team's contingent of first-year phenoms. Kendall Pickering won the 100-yard backstroke and took second in the 200-yard individual medley. Caroline Kramer captured top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke and finished third in the 200-yard IM. Kit Schneider bested her...

    Updated Oct 9, 2019

1U GOLD ADDS ANOTHER WIN The 10U Gold Falcons were able to push their season record to 6-1 thanks to some fantastic blocking by the team and tremendous running by Charles Calhoun and Owen Sunderson. Three first-half touchdowns were scored on the ground, all by Calhoun, that pushed the score to 20-0 at the half. Thanks to some fantastic team defense, the Golden Eagles were able to score only 13 points in the second half. The first-place Falcons preserved the lead for a final score of 20-13. 11U GOLD EARNS NEEDED WIN The...

Year: senior Hometown: Hinsdale When did you start running? I started running in junior high. I did the track team. My family runs, so that's how I got involved in that. What do you enjoy most about the sport? I really like the team aspect of cross country, ho we all kind of rely on each other. What is most difficult? It's a long season, so probably keeping our focus and being ready to race every weekend. How many days a week do your train? Five. Every day it's a different...

  • Now is time to get in on the outs

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 2, 2019

Don't let that little nip in the air discourage you. October is the perfect time of year to soak up the suburb's natural surroundings without summer-level concerns about sunburn (still use sunscreen!) or insect bites (still pack the bug spray!). The forest preserve districts in DuPage and Cook counties offer a harvest of activities to help residents get out of doors before Old Man Winter compels us to seek indoor amusements. Many programs are free but may require...

1U GOLD BEATS OSWEGO PANTHERS The 10U Gold Falcons battled their rivals, the Oswego Panthers all day on Dickinson field. It was an epic struggle up and down the field. The Falcons opened up the scoring on a three play, 60-yard drive highlighted by two fantastic Charles Calhoun runs, with the second one resulting in a 25-yard touchdown. The Panthers scored on their first possession at the end of the second half and got the extra point to take the lead 7-6. On the very last possession the Falcons put together an amazing...

There's a little pressure, but that also helps. We just have to know how to channel it. What's your goal this season? My goal is to win state title individually. 2U SHUTS OUT PANTHERS The Hinsdale Falcons 11U Gold picked up a much-needed victory Saturday against the Downers Grove Panthers. The final score of 20-0 was indicative of the Falcons’ complete effort on both sides of the ball. For the team’s veterans, the win avenged two years of losses to the Panthers. Hinsdale struck first as running back Patrick Connors took a handoff from quarterback Will Lynch on the game’s opening possession and sliced through the Downers Grove defense for a long touchdown. Connors would add anoth...

  • Summer was sweet for Caroline

    Ken Knutson|Updated Sep 18, 2019

What constitutes an memorable summer? If you're a professional tennis player like Hinsdale's Caroline Dolehide, the season couldn't have served up a much better sequence of thrills and delights than 2019's just did. To kick it off, the USTA chose Dolehide to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. It was a smart choice. On Aug. 3, she and partner Usue Arconada became the first American gold medalists in women's doubles since 1991 at the quadrennial sporting...

PANTHERS THWART 11u GOLD falcons The inaugural match-up between the Hinsdale Falcons 11U Gold and new league participant the Oswego Panthers did not go as planned for the Falcons, who suffered a narrow 14-7 loss. Still, the Falcons played extremely well in nearly upsetting the unbeaten Panthers. Hinsdale’s offense clicked early with wideouts Evan Bradford and Jameson Hellenga reeling in passes from quarterback Will Lynch on the game’s opening drive, only to fail on fourth down deep in Oswego territory. On the Panthers’ first...
