In 1883, a Presbyterian minister in a small town located more than 200 miles from Chicago decided to transform his sermons into a catalyst for change to help the thousands of neglected and orphaned children across the state. Through his monumental efforts, Chicago's Children's Home & Aid was born.
Across Illinois, Children's Home & Aid provides resources annually to more than 40,000 children and youth – including access to education, counseling and basic necessities. Here locally, the nonprofit's Hinsdale auxiliary consists of 30 members as well as associate members who raise funds for the organization.
"At its core, we want to help ensure children's basic needs are not only met, but moreover that they can prosper and grow in loving homes," said Hinsdale Auxiliary President Laura Glenn. "Giving to this organization has become ingrained in all our lives."
Over the past several decades, the Hinsdale Auxiliary has hosted its Kentucky Derby Day Party fundraiser on the first Saturday of May. More than 150 people attend each year to raise funds to support a number of programs, including early childhood care and education, foster care and adoption services.
The 65th annual Children's Home & Aid Kentucky Derby Day event will take place on Saturday, May 2, at the Chicago Marriott Southwest Burr Ridge, with festivities starting at 4:30 p.m.
"It is so important to raise funds for children in need and support the many family programs within the Children's Home & Aid organization, said event Chair Natalie Ryan. "The children and families served are incredibly inspiring with their stories of hope and resilience. Living in our community, it's wonderful being able to contribute to such a worthwhile cause."
Guests will enjoy entertainment, including a race-wagering station, a live auction and - new this year - a whiskey and bourbon bar featuring the many flavors found in and around Churchill Downs.
"Steam your seersucker and fluff your fascinators, it's going to be an amazing Derby Day event," Ryan said.

Community buzz
The Community House will host the 13th annual Walk the Walk event supporting mental health on Sunday, April 26.
All proceeds from this event will benefit The Counseling Center of The Community House, which provides therapy and counseling services to adults and children living with depression, anxiety and other behavioral and mental issues.
