Elaine Y. Hummer, 87, of Hinsdale, died June 19, 2021.
Elaine was a longtime teacher at Madison School. She joined the Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 staff in the 1967-68 school year as a third-grade teacher at Walker School before moving to Madison five years later, continuing to teach third grade. She retired in 1999.
A 1998 Chicago Tribune article spotlighted Elaine’s penchant for dressing up in period clothing to play historical figures like Dolly Madison, Abigail Adams and even early Hinsdale settler Mary Childs to educate and engage her students.
“It makes these people human,” she was quoted as saying. “These are people who can talk to them and tell them what life was like at a certain time. It’s more interactive and certainly more fun.”
A private celebration of life will take place in the near future.
DuPage Cremations and Memorial Chapel in West Chicago is handling the arrangements.
