Edward Paloyan, M.D., of Oak Brook passed away Oct. 13, 2021.
Ed, 89, was born in Paris in 1932, in a Charity Hospital on Rue Amboise Pare to Missak and Takouhi Paloyan. His parents were orphans who survived the Armenian genocide of World War I. They were rescued by American missionaries and brought to France. Ed had one brother, Daniel Paloyan of Glenview, who like Ed, is a University of Chicago alumnus (BS, '60, MD, '64). In 1948 the Paloyans and their two sons migrated to the United States.
While living in France, Ed attended the Lyceé Condorcét in Paris until age 16. In the afternoons, Ed studied under Philip Agazarian, an Armenian/French concert violinist with whom he performed at Salle Gaveau in Paris. Ed felt if he had not gone to the United States, he would have pursued a career as a concert violinist.
Ed spent 22 years at the University of Chicago in medical school, internship and surgical residency, receiving an associate professorship with tenure. During his residency and while on active duty in the Navy (1958-60) in the Chicago area, he continued his research projects. In 1971, he received the McClintock Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring. In 2006, Ed received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Chicago Medical and Biological Services Alumni Association.
Following his time at the University of Chicago, Ed was professor of endocrine surgery at Loyola University Medical Center and the associate chief of staff for research and development at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital. Ed was a founding member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (president 1988) and of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He moved to private practice in endocrine surgery at Hinsdale Hospital in 1994. In 2013, Ed received the Centennial Medallion Award from Hinsdale Hospital for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Richveis Paloyan.
He is survived by his children, Vivian L. Paloyan, Regina (Mark) Paloyan Walker, M.D., Edmund B. (Kathy) Paloyan, M.D. and Grace (Kevin) Paloyan Halm, R.N .; his eight grandchildren, Adrienne (Kenton) Walker Wilson, Claire Walker, M.D., and James (Caroline) Walker; Elizabeth and Katherine Paloyan; and Mason, Jillian and Maia Halm; and his wife of 21 years, Mary Driscoll Paloyan.
A service was held Oct. 16 at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hinsdale.
Interment was at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
Memorials may be made to St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, 6700 W. Diversey Ave., Chicago, IL 60707.
