Dorothy Florence Maas (née Schramm), 91, of Western Springs, formerly of Hinsdale, passed away Nov. 21, 2021.
She and her identical twin sister Dolores (Kolzow) were born in 1930 to Roy and Ruth (née Dieckhoff) Schramm in Hinsdale, where she grew up on Chestnut Street.
Dorothy enjoyed the arts and after graduation from Hinsdale Central High School, she attended the Chicago Academy of Art.
She married Richard H. Maas on June 20, 1954, and traveled to Arizona, where he earned his master’s degree in education at Northern Arizona University. “Dick and Dot” traveled west for a couple years and returned to their families in Illinois.
In 1962, they bought their home on Franklin Avenue in Western Springs. Dorothy was a homemaker at heart and loved her Sears Roebuck home.
Her home is decorated with many of her oil paintings, and she was happy when her grandson, William, followed her passion and pursued his career in painting and made his first art studio in her basement.
Dorothy preferred staying close to home, and loved the numerous family gatherings at her homestead. Holidays, birthdays, barbecues were celebrated at her “Western Springs 2000 Preservation Award’’ home.
The love for her three daughters and their families have always been her focus. She would say that her greatest accomplishment was raising her three girls.
She has many lifelong friends from her church, St. James Lutheran in Western Springs. She has been blessed with wonderful caregivers, Minka and Yan, with Home Helpers. Her family is forever grateful for their compassion and care. Dorothy began with St. Thomas Hospice a year ago and was comforted by Dr. John Lui, nurse Joanne and many other caring staff members.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Richard H. Maas.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Chris) Binversie, Christine (Terry) Blake and Madelyn (Ken) Beugger; her grandchildren, Lydia Chronos, William (Emily) Blake, Jackie Blake, Becky Blake, Katie (Kyle) Blair and Kevin Beugger; her step-grandchildren, Megan (Justin) Roggenbuck, Brandon (Laura) Binversie and Katie (Blake) Edwards; her step-great-grandchildren, Taylor, Emma and Rylee Roggenbuck and Parker, Liam and Camden Edwards; and her nieces and nephews, Dawn (Dave) Kolzow Morse and Jeff (Jakki) Kolzow, along with their children.
