John Woodney Otten, 68, of Hinsdale and Hilton Head, S.C., passed away Jan. 14, 2022, after a short-term acute illness.
He was born in 1953 in Washington, D.C., to Dorothy P. and Col. Charles F. Otten.
As a military son, John attended four years at Nurnberg American High School in Germany, where his love of travel was inspired as he explored Europe at every opportunity and gained the rich experiences for his many tales of adventure.
After graduation from the University of South Carolina, he embarked upon a career in the logistics business, which ultimately brought him to live in Hinsdale.
John was devoted to his family and loved participating in his sons’ many activities, most cherished of which was serving as the Scoutmaster of Troop 8 at Covenant Church. He lived the example of kind leadership, with a ready smile and positive outlook on life. He was very proud to have mentored and coached scouts to achieve Eagle rank.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard; and his mother in law Teri McArdle.
He is survived by his wife, Kelli, née McArdle; and his sons, John “Jack” Berry and William Woodney.
A memorial event will take place at a later date.
