John "Jack" Michael McDermott, 86, of Hinsdale, Marco Island, Fla., and Delavan Lake, Wis., died Oct. 9, 2023.
Jack, the son of John and Mary, graduated high school from St. Ignatius College Prep and went on to college at Northern Illinois University. He earned his law degree at Kent College of Law in Chicago.
Jack was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Korea and Japan. Soon after his return home from the Marines, he married the love of his life, Dorothy. They were married 59 years.
Jack spent his entire career as an attorney for Cigna Insurance where he created the partnership Modesto, Reynolds and McDermott.
Jack and Dorothy raised their three boys in Hinsdale and spent their summers in Delavan Lake - Assembly Park. Jack loved watching and coaching his sons in their sports while they were growing up.
Jack was a die-hard Notre Dame football fan. Everyone always knew where to find him when Notre Dame games were on TV.
Upon retirement, he enjoyed attending all his grandchildren's sporting events. Jack and Dorothy would spend their winters in Marco Island with family and friends. You could always find him reading the newspaper or a book on his lanai.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, nee Moody; his children, John (Leslie), Kevin and James (Julie); his grandchildren, Emily, Sean, Michael, Jimmy, Maggie and Katie McDermott; and may in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, Monsignor Ignatius McDermott. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside.
Family and friends will meet for an 11 a.m. funeral Mass Saturday, Oct. 14, at St. John of the Cross Church, 5005 Wolf Road, Western Springs.
Interment is private.
