Margery I. Bergstrom, 94, of Downers Grove, passed away Sept. 29, 2023.
She was born in Carbondale to John and Reba Ivers.
Margery attended the University of Illinois in Champaign where she met Donald in Oratorio Society. She graduated in 1951 with a degree in music education and went on to teach, traveling between the four public elementary schools in Downers Grove. Once she started a family, she retired from teaching to become a full-time mother. In later years she worked with Donald in his architecture firm in Hinsdale, retiring with him in 2002.
A longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, Margery served on numerous committees over the years and held various offices in the UMW. She played in the church's Chancel Ringers handbell choir for 29 years and sang in the Chancel Choir for 41 years.
She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed accompanying the Wesley children's choir for a number of years. Always creative, she handcrafted numerous Christmas ornaments for the church, as well as a set of paraments.
A good friend to many, Margery enjoyed spending time with family and friends, who always appreciated her quick wit and sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Donald.
She is survived by her son, Craig (Denise) Bergstrom; her daughter, Melinda Bergstrom; her grandchildren, Brandon, Christopher and Alexandra; her sisters, Alice Haegele, Dorothy (Loren) Tice and Eloise Sime; her sister-in-law, Virginia Bergstrom; and many nephews and nieces.
Visitation is at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, 1032 Maple Ave.
A memorial service will follow at the church at 10 a.m. Interment is private at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darien.
