Student athlete profile - Dru Devata

Dru Devata

Clarendon Hills

What was your goal going into your senior golf season?

There's nothing like winning as a team, and that's the main goal. Winning individually is great, but winning as a team is a different level. It's a different dynamic. It makes the winning that much sweeter and It makes the losing a little more painful

What has playing for the Red Devils meant to you?

Playing golf at Central has given me a different community, and when I was an underclassman it gave me some friends who were juniors and seniors. Golf has made me a better person.

How how have you evolved as a competitor since freshman year?

I think I've gotten a lot better mentally and as a teammate. I've just learned that there's a lot more to golf than just playing. You've got to keep your head in the right place out there.

How would your teammates describe you?

I think the answer has kind of changed each year. This year I've been trying to be a role model for the younger guys who haven't had as much high school golf experience. They'd probably say I'm light-hearted and try to keep the vibe kind of fun. Hinsdale Central is a super-esteemed program, and we've had a lot of success, but if you're not having fun, there's no point in being out there.

What's the strength of your game?

Hitting greens in regulation has always been among my best stats. I've tried to become a more well-rounded player so I can use course management when I don't have my best stuff.

Do you have any pre-match rituals?

I set my clothes out the night before - you have to make sure you look good and feel good to play good. I also put special marks on my ball: one blue dot, a black line and two little black dots.

What's the coolest course you've played?

Conway Farms in Lake Forest is just super special.

Where are you heading next year?

I've committed to play at Emory University.

Why does coach Serge Pensik like having Devata on the squad?

Dru has brought a lot of leadership and maturity to our team. He is an exceptional player and competitor. He coaches up young players and helps them understand high school golf.
