Check out ways to stay in shape both indoors and outdoors as the mercury falls

The temperature is dropping and many sporting activities, like basketball and soccer, are shifting inside. But residents who like the cold can take advantage of several opportunities to stay fit this season, including these programs.

Pickleball programs

• Join other pickleball enthusiasts of all ages at the Fall Rally & Rendezvous social event from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at The Community House, 415 W. Eighth St.

Meet, mingle and learn about the sport from Community House adult instructors at this open house gathering. Come early for refreshments at 6 p.m., with advanced play, beginning play with instruction and prize games for adults and ages 6-17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. followed by open play from 8 to 9 p.m. Registration is requested by Tuesday, Nov. 12, to ensure the event can take place.

The cost is $15, $13 for Community House members; walk-ins are welcome until 8 p.m. on the day of the event at the same cost level. For more information or to register, visit http://www.thecommunityhouse.org or call (630) 323-7500.

• Pickleball players 16 and older, of all skill levels, looking for friendly competition and camaraderie can come to open play times throughout the week at The Community House, 415 E. Eighth St. Limited to a max of 12 at a time, players rotate throughout the two-hour session.

Open play continues through Dec. 19, and times are 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sundays. Some days are not available, so check the website at http://www.thecommunityhouse.org for the full schedule.

The cost is $60 for a 10-punch card, $50 for Community House members, and $8/$7 for individual visits. Just stop and pay at the front desk upon arrival.

Cardio-copia

• Thanksgiving has become a popular day to get in a workout, burning off some calories for the holiday feast. Make sure you're ready to run with the Turkey Trot Tune-Up 5K at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Lisle Community Park, 1825 Short St. in Lisle.

As an incentive to sign up, participants will receive a voucher for a free regular value basket at Culver's in Downers Grove, 2500 Ogden Ave.

Registration is $40; the fee increases to $50 on race day.

• Before tucking into to that Thanksgiving turkey leg, get your own legs moving at Elmhurst's annual Dan Gibbons 5KTurkey Trot 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28.

The 41st annual fun run kicks off from Park and Cottage Hill avenues and winds through Elmhurst neighborhoods. Proceeds from the event benefit area food pantries, including HCS Family Services in Hinsdale

Youth athletics

• Kids ages 5-8 can start training for the upcoming spring soccer season with the winter skills program Soccer Shots Premier at The Community House, 415 W. Eighth St.

Youth will hone their individual skills, fitness and sportsmanship through fun games and team interaction. Players also will be introduced to competition in a developmentally appropriate manner.

Participants can choose either Thursday sessions from 6:10 to 6:55 p.m. Nov. 14 to March 13 or Sunday sessions from 5:25 to 6:10 p.m. Nov. 17 to March 16.

• Chicago Elite Volleyball will hold a Thanksgiving Break Camp for ages 8-14 from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Wednesday, Nov. 25-27, at The Community House, 415 W. Eighth St.

This child development program is designed to introduce children to the game of volleyball and to continue to improve their individual skill development in the sport. Chicago Elite classes develop important skills such as passing, setting, attacking, blocking, serving, defense and movement. Players will be divided according to age and skill level and challenged accordingly.

• Registration is open to be part of Hinsdale's longstanding tradition of Jodie Harrison basketball, the recreational youth league open to kids in second through eighth grade that focuses on instruction and helping kids learn and enjoy the game of basketball.

Practices and games are held at The Community House, 415 E. Eighth St., and players receive a T-shirt or jersey (fifth-graders and up receive shorts). Every attempt is made to place children on a team with at least some of their schoolmates.

Players must commit to one practice during the week and one game per week (Saturday or Sunday); practices begin the week of Jan. 6, and games begin Jan. 18.

Medals are awarded to all second- and third-graders; for fourth through eighth grades, the top two teams in each division receive trophies.
