South teen arrested for having loaded gun

A 16-year-old Hinsdale South High School student from Willowbrook remains in custody after he was arrested Nov. 21 of bringing a loaded gun to school. He has been charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in public — school and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, both felonies.

On Nov. 21, authorities at Hinsdale South received information that a student had brought to school a loaded firearm, later identified as a 9mm Taurus GX-4 handgun, according to a press release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin. The juvenile was located later that day at the school, taken into custody without incident and transported to the Darien Police Department for questioning.

Hinsdale High School District 86 Superintendent Mike Lach convened a panel of officials Monday night to address the incident with the public. District officials said a weapons detection system was deployed at the school and remained in place this week, with a decision forthcoming on whether or not to continue using the system when school resumes on Monday.

The teen’s next court date is Dec. 2
