Barbara Hopkins, née Sullivan, passed away peacefully Oct. 10, 2024.
Barbara was born in Chicago in 1942. As a very young girl she moved with her family to Maywood, where she attended Lincoln School and Proviso East High School.
In 1961 Barbara married Brian Hopkins and the couple moved to Hinsdale in 1964, where she raised her four sons. Juggling family and career, she worked for the following banks: the Bank of Hinsdale, the Harris Bank of Hinsdale and the Midwest Bank and Trust of Hinsdale, where she acted as vice president. In addition, she was active in the community and a member of the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce from 1987-2007, serving as president from 1997-99. In 2001 she was named the chamber's Member of the Year.
As an avid antiquer, Barbara enjoyed going to house sales and flea markets. She was known for her uncanny knack for sniffing out bargains on things she loved to collect, such as clocks, furniture, glassware and dolls.
But above all, Barbara will be remembered for her strength, kindness, openness and adventurous and loving spirit. She will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph (Xevi), Peter (Mary) and Daniel (Lauren); her grandchildren, Meghan (Timothy), Connor, Kae, Kyle and Makanda; her sisters, Patricia, Marie, and Sally; and her sister-in-law Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brian; and her son, Scott.
A memorial gathering is being planned for 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Katherine Legge Memorial Lodge, 5901 S County Line Road, Hinsdale. Refreshments will be served. All who knew Barbara are cordially invited to attend. At 2 p.m., a short presentation will be shown, and any attendees who wish to do so will be invited to share a few words about Barbara.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made online to the West Suburban Humane Society at https://www.wshs-dg.org/get-involved/donate.
